Overview:

  • Black Ops 7 arrives Nov 14 with no carry-forward skins, a fresh start for COD fans.

  • Pre-order Black Ops 7 for Oct 2 early access; beta begins Oct 5 on all major platforms.

  • Activision scraps skin transfers, keeping only GobbleGums & XP tokens for BO7 progression.

The highly anticipated Black Ops 7 was finally announced during Gamescom 2025.  However, the twist arrives soon when Treyarch and Activision announced their latest decision of leaving behind one of the most beloved carry-forward features in the upcoming installment.

In Call of Duty franchise, players collect and purchase operator skins, weapon skins, and several other cosmetic items throughout their playthrough in every season. However, in a sudden move, Call of Duty Black Ops 7 scrapped this beloved feature completely. This essentially means players can’t get their collected operator skins, weapons, and blueprints from Black Ops 6 into the sequel.

Black Ops 7: A Return to Authenticity Over Continuity

The massive success of Black Ops 6 has called for the sequel, but players didn’t expect Treyarch to bring it within a year. As per the official information, the game will drop worldwide in mid-November. The Black Ops 7 release date is scheduled for November 14, 2025.

However, fans can access the game earlier, with the beta test starting on October 5. Players who will go for a Black Ops 7 pre-order will gain access two days before, on October 2, on platforms including Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Slim, and PlayStation 5 Pro.

Fans are rushing to secure their Black Ops 7 Pre Order to unlock exclusive rewards and early access bonuses. This information created a wave of excitement among gamers, but soon things changed with Activision, as the franchise announced that it was bidding goodbye to the carry-forward system this time.

This system was a win-win situation for the hardcore fans and the developers. Players used to spend bucks on purchasing premium skins knowing that they will be in their inventory even after the season ends and a new Call of Duty installment comes. It not only highlights convenience, but it’s also a symbol of continuity and progression between titles.

Rumors have been in the air for a long time, but as the trailer rolls out, it’s become evident. Activision expressed, “Black Ops 7 needs to feel authentic to Call of Duty and its setting.” This means all the crossover content featuring  skins like Beavis and Butt-Head, Squid Game, TMNT, and others won’t be there in BO7. Even the highly exciting bundle The Wilds won’t come as well.

While this has suppressed the excitement, the developers have confirmed that, even though operator skins and other cosmetics won’t be carried over, progression perks like GobbleGums and XP tokens will make it to BO7.

Community Reaction: Disappointment Meets Cautious Optimism

Since this news surfaced, fans have been giving mixed reactions. Fans have been blaming the developers for rewinding the clock suddenly, without any prior hints. On Reddit, one COD player has stated, “RIP everyone who wasted money thinking they'll be able to use that in BO7.”

However, a group of players has suspected that maybe this will be a double-tip from Activision’s end. Later in Black Ops 7, they will feature those same bundles and resell them.

As the backlash started growing about this omission of the beloved feature, Activision appeared with a clarification stating, “In Black Ops 7, bundles and items will be crafted to fit the Black Ops identity. We hear the feedback. We need to deliver a better balance toward the immersive, core Call of Duty experience.”

Final Thoughts

This sudden scraping of this fan-favorite feature marks a significant blow. It can impact the game positively and negatively. The chances are 50-50. On one hand, this signifies a turning point that the Call of Duty franchise is adopting for a wider monetization strategy, and on the other hand, it marks a thematic turning point, a fresh start.

Anyways, this choice may come with severe consequences. Players who invested in BO6 skins may feel alienated, and the speculations regarding the potential resale of similar cosmetics can impact the community’s desire to dive into the game. However, until the game comes, it’s hard to say what this decision will bring for gamers.
