Meta, Twitter, Google, and TikTok are failing to stop hate and threats against LGBTQ + users

Social media platforms including Meta (Facebook, Instagram), Twitter, Google, and TikTok are failing to stop hate and threats against LGBTQ + community users around the world, a report issued by advocacy group GLAAD found, Social Media Safety Index, an organization that fights hate against gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer people. It has worked on these issues in various ways for over a decade. None of the platforms scored higher than 50% against GLAAD's benchmarks. The reality is in this report, there's very little transparency and very little accountability.

Social media platforms are failing to stop hate and threats against LGBTQ users:

According to the GLAAD, the tech companies (Meta, Twitter, Google & TikTok) are safeguarding information about how they respond to those attacks, revealing few details about how often they take down posts or accounts that push hate speech or harass LGBTQ+ users. While all of the companies have written policies stating their commitment to LGBTQ+ users, some of them lack even the most foundational policies.

Tech companies on a range of policies, from prohibiting targeted deadnaming and misgendering of transgender and non-binary people to offering queer-specific training to content moderators. So, GLAAD recommends that all platforms institute policies banning targeted deadnaming and misgendering and prohibiting advertising based on information about users' sexual orientation and gender identity.

The new scores are based on factors ranging from whether the platform includes gender pronouns on profiles, to content moderation and diversity of their workforces. "Basically, the entire industry is failing LGBTQ people," said Jenni Olson, senior director of GLAAD's social media safety program. Social media platforms and so many other tech firms are underregulated, and that's part of the reason that they are so unsafe. "Today's political and cultural landscapes demonstrate the real-life harmful effects of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and misinformation online," said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis.
