Microsoft has introduced a quiet change in Windows 11. Although tech enthusiasts only recently discovered it, the feature seems to have been added with the April update. The newly found feature adds a new way to remove parts of Microsoft Copilot from PCs.

The update was not heavily announced by the company, but users quickly noticed the new option. The feature comes at a time when many are concerned about how much AI should be built into everyday software. Some users welcomed the change since they do not use Copilot often. Others feel Microsoft may be reacting to complaints about AI tools appearing across Windows without much choice.

Windows 11 Now Lets Users Remove Copilot Files

The new change in the Group Policy was first spotted by Windows Latest. Previously, users could manually uninstall Copilot, but the AI pops up after every update. However, the latest change in the Group Policy ensures that once Copilot is deleted, it won’t reappear.

The feature was included with Windows 11’s April 2026 Update, but Microsoft never mentioned it. To use the feature, users must ensure they aren’t using Windows Home edition and then access Group Policy. If these criteria are met, then they can do it following the steps below:

  • Go to User Configuration.

  • Click on Administrative Templates

  • Select Windows Components

  • Open Windows AI.

Once there, they will find an option ‘Remove Microsoft Copilot app.’ Selecting it not only removes the desktop version, but also Microsoft 365's Copilot. However, for those using the Windows Home edition and unable to access Group Policy, this feature isn’t for them.

The Cleanup Option Could Help IT Teams

The feature may also help companies and IT departments. Businesses often manage large numbers of computers and usually prefer cleaner systems with fewer unused apps. Removing unwanted AI tools can make devices easier to manage. Some companies also have privacy rules that limit how AI software can be used at work.

These are some of the reasons that the update may help IT teams save time while setting up and maintaining Windows devices. It could also reduce confusion for workers who never planned to use Copilot in the first place.

Microsoft’s AI Plans Still Face Questions

Even with the new cleanup option, Microsoft’s AI push is under scrutiny. Over the past year, the company has added Copilot to Windows, Office apps, and several online services. Some users enjoy the extra tools, but others feel AI is being added too quickly. The quiet update may help calm some of those concerns. However, many users continue asking for one thing: the choice to decide how much AI they want on their PCs.
