Samsung is rumored to be preparing its most significant Fold redesign since the series debuted in 2019. New leaks suggest the company is working on a wider version of Galaxy Z Fold 8, moving away from the tall and narrow design that has defined every Fold model so far. Leaked dummy units and renders indicate the phone could offer a noticeably different experience.
The biggest change appears to be the outer display. The current Galaxy Fold models use a narrow cover screen that many users find restrictive for typing, browsing, and daily use. The leaked Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide appears shorter and broader, making the cover display look closer to a conventional smartphone screen.
This could reduce the need to unfold the device for routine tasks. A wider display would also make apps, messages, and web pages easier to navigate. When opened, the device is expected to provide a larger canvas for multitasking, gaming, and video streaming.
Reports claim Fold 8 Wide could measure about 4.9mm when unfolded, potentially making it one of Samsung’s thinnest foldables. The company faces growing competition from Chinese smartphone brands. Several rivals have launched thinner and lighter foldable devices in recent years.
This shift has raised expectations across the industry. Samsung appears to be responding with a slimmer Fold design of its own. A thinner chassis could improve portability, while requiring compromises elsewhere.
Some leaked prototypes suggest Fold 8 Wide may feature a dual-camera setup instead of the triple-camera system expected on a higher-end Fold 8 Ultra variant.
There is also speculation that Samsung could limit or remove support for features such as the S Pen to keep the device thin. The company has not confirmed any of these details. Prototype designs often change before launch, so the final product may differ from the units seen in leaks.

The overall design hints at the changing trends within the industry of foldable phones. Competing foldable devices employ a wider screen that resembles conventional smartphone devices.
In most cases, people have shown a preference for such designs as it provides more convenient use of the device while it is folded up. Experts also point out that this move by Samsung is in response to the potential competition from Apple.
There are rumors about the introduction of a new foldable device from Apple, which could take a wide design similar to Samsung's old one. If that is true, Samsung can make changes now before its rivals come into this market.
Samsung did not respond to these leaks. The launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Series is scheduled for later this year. If the leaks prove to be true, Samsung can be making a massive step towards its Fold Series for almost a decade.
