OpenAI has established a local unit in India and plans to build its first office in New Delhi later this year. This strategic move shows India's growing significance in OpenAI's worldview. Since last year, ChatGPT has grabbed significant attention in the Indian market. 

OpenAI is now looking to establish a local team to develop strong partnerships within businesses, government, developers, and academia.

Sam Altman Highlights India’s Potential

Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, has praised India’s tech ecosystem. “The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader—amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the India AI Mission,” he said during a media interaction. OpenAI’s India team will focus on making AI more accessible and developing solutions that cater specifically to the Indian market.

OpenAI is also launching initiatives focusing on the Indian user base. Presented at Rs. 399 per month, ChatGPT Go aims to integrate with UPI. The OpenAI Academy, in collaboration with India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, is scaling up to become a national-level organization. 

Apart from these, the GPT-5 model now offers greater support for Indian languages. The Study Mode feature facilitates student learning through interaction and provides stepwise explanations, possessing all the potential as a tool in education.

Why the OpenAI India Office Matters

Having an office in India bolsters OpenAI's commitment to the nation’s growth as a key AI hub. ChatGPT users in India have quadrupled in the last year, placing it in the top five developer markets on OpenAI's platform. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has recently stated, "OpenAI’s decision to establish a presence in India reflects the country’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption." The office will also host India's first OpenAI Education Summit later this month.

This indicates a new phase of growth for OpenAI, moving from online growth to on-the-ground presence. Under local hiring and partnership, the company might understand regional needs and develop a solution that caters to students, developers, and entrepreneurs in a better way that suits Indian users.

OpenAI is combining its global expertise with local insights by investing in India’s potential, making AI more relevant and accessible. This latest move will allow the AI  giant to assist the country in its dream of becoming a global leader in AI.
