OpenAI has warned people using its macOS applications about a potential security risk. The company is telling everyone to update their software to the latest versions right away. This alert comes after a problem was found in Axios, a third-party developer tool. OpenAI claims that there is no proof that any private data was stolen or that its systems were hacked. However, the company is still being proactive to keep users safe.
The trouble started on March 31, 2026, when a malicious version of Axios was used during an automated process at OpenAI. This specific process helps sign in the apps; it is how macOS knows an app is real and safe to open. The compromised version involved access to sensitive security certificates.
Even though it is unlikely the attacker actually stole the certificates, OpenAI wants to be careful. The company is replacing the outdated security certificate with a new one. This is why the previous versions of OpenAI Mac apps will soon stop working. If you do not update, you will not be able to get new features or use the apps after a certain date.

If you use a Mac, you need to update apps like ChatGPT Desktop, Codex, and Atlas. By downloading the latest versions, you ensure your apps are using the new, secure certificate. OpenAI has set a deadline for this change. Starting May 8, 2026, the company will fully forgo the old certificate. Once that happens, Apple’s security systems will block any previous versions of the apps from launching or being downloaded.
OpenAI has worked with outside security experts and Apple to fix this issue. They have already released new builds of all their Mac products. By making these changes now, the company is making sure that no one can use the potentially risky certificate to trick users. To keep your computer safe and your apps running smoothly, check for updates in your Mac app settings before the May deadline.
