Microsoft is finally making changes to one of the most criticized parts of Windows 11. After years of user complaints, the company has started bringing back several taskbar features that disappeared when Windows 11 first launched.According to reports, Microsoft’s latest preview update adds smaller taskbar icons and improved customization options. The update is currently rolling out to selected users before a wider release.

Windows 11 is Bringing Back Features Users Missed

One of the biggest complaints about Windows 11 was the lack of taskbar flexibility. In Windows 10, users had more control over the taskbar layout and icon sizes. After upgrading to Windows 11, many noticed those settings were gone. Some users also felt the larger taskbar design wasted screen space, especially on smaller laptops.

Microsoft is now changing that. According to reports, users can now reduce taskbar icon sizes to create more screen space. The update also improves how the taskbar behaves on tablets and compact displays.

About the latest update, Microsoft’s design director has revealed, “If accessibility or ergonomics make the top of the screen easier to reach, you can place the taskbar there. If you rely on the taskbar to keep track of your work, a vertical layout with ungrouped icons can help you stay organized.”

For many users, these changes may make daily use feel more comfortable again. The complaints around Windows 11 never fully disappeared after launch. Online discussions about the taskbar continued for years, with many users asking Microsoft to restore older features rather than remove them.

The latest update suggests the company has finally started responding more directly to that feedback. Users who want to access the feature have to open Settings and then navigate to Personalization. Next, click on Taskbar and change Taskbar behaviors.

Microsoft’s New Update Feels Like a Delayed Fix

The new taskbar update feels important because it addresses problems users have discussed since the beginning of Windows 11. Many people liked the cleaner design of the operating system, but they did not want to lose familiar tools at the same time. Some users even delayed upgrading because of the taskbar changes.

Microsoft has gradually restored missing features through smaller updates over the last few years. This latest update continues that pattern. Some users online are now calling the update less of a new feature and more of a correction to earlier design decisions. The company appears more focused now on balancing modern visuals with practical features people use every day.

Windows 11 May Finally Be Moving in the Right Direction

The newest changes may seem small, but they could still make a difference in how many people feel about Windows 11 overall. Microsoft seems to get that design alone isn't enough if people start losing flexibility and control. For long-time Windows users, it still matters that settings feel familiar, so they can work more comfortably.

The taskbar updates probably won't fix every single complaint, but they suggest Microsoft is paying way closer attention to real user feedback again. Many users feel this update makes Windows 11 more complete.
