Microsoft has announced another round of layoffs, cutting nearly 4,800 jobs, or about 2.1% of its global workforce, as the company reshapes its business and doubles down on operational efficiency. The biggest impact will be felt by its Xbox gaming division, which is set to lose around 3,200 positions through the current fiscal year as part of a sweeping restructuring.
The latest layoffs come as Microsoft continues to balance heavy investments in artificial intelligence while addressing weaker performance in parts of its gaming business.
As part of the overhaul, Microsoft will spin off several Xbox game development studios. Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions are expected to become independent companies, while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs will move under new ownership. The company is also reviewing strategic options for Arkane Studios.
The restructuring represents a change in Microsoft’s approach to gaming, as the company will no longer grow through acquisitions but will concentrate on operational efficiency by reducing management layers and focusing on high-performing game franchises.
The head of Xbox, Asha Sharma, stated that such moves will help to create a more sustainable business as the restructuring process is expected to continue during the year.
It has been stated that the current layoffs are not due to replacing staff with AI. It has been stated that such organizational changes are driven by the necessity to adapt to changing market conditions and increased operating costs.
Like other major tech companies, Microsoft invests billions in the development of AI infrastructure, which includes data centers and supercomputing resources. Those investments have increased pressure to improve profitability across other parts of the business.
Additionally, the gaming business unit has seen increasing competition from rivals Sony and Nintendo, along with underperforming hardware and subscription businesses, leading to a complete revision of its strategy.
