Instagram has to roll out a new update that allows users to reshare any story from a public account, even if they are not tagged. This move could really shake up how content circulates on the platform in the coming days.
The update, confirmed by the company through a post on Threads, follows Instagram’s earlier push to simplify reposting across Reels and feed posts. Nonetheless, creators preferring tighter control over their content can still disable this feature through privacy settings.
Up till now, users were only allowed to re-share a story if they were tagged on it, meaning that the original poster usually had to include every user individually.
If someone happened to miss tagging friends in a group picture, resharing that story became a chore. Users also often resorted to taking screenshots in order to make others aware of an emotional, funny or noteworthy story from other public accounts.
Instagram’s newest update eliminates that friction: users can now credit and reshare stories with a single tap, in line with how reposts already work for reels. This update is part of Meta’s push to reduce friction in sharing, aimed at increasing overall engagement on the platform.

Instagram has made it quite simple:
Launch the application on your device.
View any story from a public account.
Tap the ‘Share’ icon next to the message box.
Select ‘Add to your story’ to make the story appear under your account, automatically attributed to you as the creator.
The rollout is global across both iOS and Android. Many users already have access, and those without it should receive the update shortly.
Public accounts looking for controllable access to their stories can turn off the feature with a few simple steps:
Go to Settings & Activity
Tap on Privacy → Story
Toggle off ‘Allow sharing to story.’
Once disabled, Re-share options for your Stories disappear, allowing full control of access to the owner.
Instagram’s newest feature cements the app’s ongoing effort to double down on seamless sharing, attributing creators and minimizing friction in daily exchanges. While it might appear as an insignificant tweak, this update has the potential to completely reformat the way stories travel across the platform.
