Microsoft internally expected a $92 billion return from its investment in OpenAI, CEO Satya Nadella said during the court proceedings linked to Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft.

The remarks came during the hearings in a federal court in Oakland, California. Musk has accused OpenAI of moving away from its original nonprofit mission after building close commercial ties with Microsoft.

Court documents showed Microsoft made aggressive financial projections after backing OpenAI in its early years. The company first invested $1 billion in 2019 and later expanded the partnership with multi-billion-dollar commitments.

Nadella defended the investment strategy in his testimony and revealed that Microsoft entered the partnership at a time when generative AI was fraught with uncertainty.

“It has worked out well because we took the risk,” Nadella said in court.

OpenAI Partnership Reshaped Microsoft’s AI Push

Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI became central to its AI strategy after ChatGPT triggered a global surge in interest in generative AI in late 2022. Integration of OpenAI models into Bing, Windows, and Microsoft 365 is among the actions taken to secure the deal.

OpenAI uses Azure as its main cloud service provider. Microsoft aims to enhance its competitive advantage against both Google and Amazon. The court proceedings showed that Microsoft expected to achieve a $92 billion profit by the end of 2023 after acquiring OpenAI.

The value of OpenAI has skyrocketed since then, generating additional profits on Microsoft’s investment. Musk pointed out that Microsoft had raised objections about OpenAI’s decision to work with companies that were not Azure.

Musk’s Lawsuit Targets Commercial Prioritization of OpenAI

Musk’s statements about OpenAI show that the organization has shifted its initial mission toward a profit-focused business. Both OpenAI and Microsoft rejected these accusations, which they attributed to their partnership, which they claimed led to greater technological progress.

The two parties face accusations of competing with each other while also attempting to control and exploit one another. Nadella expressed his desire to become ‘the IBM to somebody else’s Microsoft’ when discussing IBM’s decline in PCs.
