EA is planning to launch Battlefield 6’s Battle Royale mode months after the base game’s release. While rumours around a Battle Royale mode have been circulating for a while, it’s still in development and likely won’t be available until early 2026.
Although some fans have had a sneak peek at the game in closed playtests throughout the year, the majority of gamers had to wait until the official Battlefield 6 trailer was released on July 24 for their first public glimpse of the highly anticipated title. This trailer marked a significant milestone in the game's hype cycle, offering fans their first glimpse of the title's new features and gameplay.
This comes amid rising expectations for Battlefield 6, rumoured to return to modern warfare settings with large-scale destruction and up to 128-player battles. While the base game is expected to push the boundaries of realism and chaos, fans of the battle royale format have to wait a little longer.
Sources indicate that the development of the battle royale mode has been pushed back beyond the game’s launch due to inherent challenges encountered during development under the ‘basics first’ process. EA does not want to repeat the error of Battlefield V, where the late introduction of Firestorm brought it no recognition. It was a tightly packed genre guarded by Warzone, Fortnite, and Apex Legends.
One source familiar with the development process shared, “Rather than rushing out a half-baked mode, the team is prioritizing stability, balance, and polished multiplayer gameplay first.”
While COD did well with its pivot into battle royale with Warzone, the Battlefield series has suffered some bumps along the way. Firestorm lacked post-launch content updates and was never integrated with the ecosystem. EA appears to be intent on avoiding the same mistake twice.
Interestingly, some fans think this delay might be a good thing. “Let them get the core game right first. BR can come later if it’s well made,” wrote one Reddit user in the Battlefield fan thread.
Despite the rumoured delay, fans are saying that the battle royale hasn’t been knocked off the block. The whispered news is that the development of the battle royale is running in parallel, possibly even as a free-to-play companion, akin to Warzone.

EA has hinted during earnings calls that the game is slated to have ‘live service’ features, plus post-launch content, implying that battle royale may be a major facet of that plan.
For now, the fans will need to wait for EA’s official announcement. The game is reasonably anticipated to be revealed in full at an upcoming EA Play event or digital showcase. If the rumours were true, Battlefield 6 ought to be introduced with pleasing visuals and gigantic maps.
Still, expectations have reached their limit. With the shoots heating up, this presents the best opportunity for Battlefield to reclaim its throne, somewhat competing with the evolution of battle royale formats.
