Apple has launched two new products with an important under-the-hood upgrade. The tech giant introduced iPhone 17e and iPad Air that run on Apple’s latest C1X chip. This new 5G modem promises faster internet, improved privacy, and longer battery life.
The most important change comes in speed. Apple says the C1X chip delivers faster data performance. On the iPad Air with M4, cellular speeds are up to 50% faster than on the previous model with a different modem. iPhone 17e is also up to twice as fast as the C1 modem used previously. This means quicker downloads, smoother video streaming, and faster app loading.
The C1X chip is an upgraded version of Apple’s previous modem, and speed is not the only improvement. Apple says the new modem can also handle busy networks better by prioritizing important data.
Battery life also improves with the new chip. Mobile data often drains power quickly. Apple designed the C1X to consume less energy. The modem in M4 iPad Air uses up to 30% less power during active cellular use.
This means longer battery life during travel or outdoor work. iPhone 17e also benefits from this power efficiency.
Apple has also added a privacy feature called Limit Precise Location. This feature works only on devices with Apple’s own modem. It operates on iOS 26.3. When toggled on, cellular networks can only see a general location, such as a neighborhood, rather than the exact address. Apple says this feature does not affect signal quality.
iPhone 17e functions on an A19 chip, a 48MP camera, MagSafe support, and satellite connectivity. The phone costs approximately $599. The new iPad Air includes the powerful M4 chip and improved 5G performance.
With the C1X chip, Apple continues to build more of its own technology. By designing both the processor and the modem, the company improves speed, privacy, and battery life in a balanced way. The iPhone 17e and M4 iPad Air show how small changes inside a device can make a big difference in daily use.
