Anthropic, the company that created the Claude AI chatbot, has taken its collaboration with Google to new heights by using Google's custom Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) to power its next-generation AI models.
The partnership allows Anthropic to use up to 1 million TPUs, significantly boosting its training capacity for large-scale AI systems. The agreement indicates a global trend toward more powerful chips as the AI industry grows rapidly.
In an official statement, Anthropic said, “The expansion is worth tens of billions of dollars and is expected to bring well over a gigawatt of capacity online in 2026.” The move positions the company to train increasingly complex models while keeping efficiency and cost in check.
This partnership deepens Anthropic’s long-standing relationship with Google Cloud, which has been one of its key infrastructure providers since the early development stages of Claude AI.
Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, commented on the deal: “Anthropic’s choice to significantly expand its usage of TPUs reflects the strong price-performance and efficiency its teams have seen with TPUs for several years. We are continuing to innovate and drive further efficiencies and increased capacity of our TPUs, building on our already mature AI accelerator portfolio, including our seventh-generation TPU, Ironwood.” Anthropic highlighted that Google’s TPUs deliver better performance and cost optimization than other processors currently on the market.
The collaboration highlights the mutual reliance of both firms on their respective strengths, Google's chip innovation and Anthropic's AI research, to compete in a field dominated by NVIDIA-powered systems.
Amidst global chip shortages, TPUs designed for scalability and low latency are being recognized as a reliable alternative.
Anthropic is bringing a new update to Claude that includes a “memory” feature, enabling the AI chatbot to remember things from previous interactions. This feature is available to all paid subscribers and can be activated in Claude’s settings.
The users can turn on features such as “search and reference chats” and “generate memory from chat history,” which will help make their interactions with Claude more personalized and context-aware.
The collaboration and the product update are the signals of the AI venture’s broader plan. Anthropic has secured its position as a strong player in generative AI through usability, performance, and human-centered design.
Anthropic aims to make AI systems smarter and more efficient. This will be achieved by using Google's TPU technology, along with Claude's evolving capabilities. It remains to be seen how the partnership will transform the AI space, but these changes are bound to revolutionize the field immensely.
