Anthropic has released a web application for its AI coding assistant, Claude Code, which allows developers to build and manage multiple AI coding agents from within their browser.

The web application is offered to subscribers of the Anthropic Pro and Max plans. It can be accessed through claude.ai or from the Claude iOS app by clicking on the ‘Code’ tab.

This move extends Claude Code beyond its initial command-line interface (CLI) form, which programmers have historically accessed from a terminal. With a web version, Anthropic wants to enhance the portability of AI coding agents in the coding space.

How Competitive is the AI Coding Market?

The AI coding tool market is competitive. Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot had previously held sway, but other rivals such as Cursor, Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic have released robust web-based competitors.

Claude Code has stood out through its achievements. It has increased by a factor of ten in users since May and currently adds more than $500 million per year to Anthropic’s top line.

Anthropic product manager Cat Wu credits a lot of Claude Code’s popularity with the company’s AI models, which coders increasingly favor. She also mentions the team intentionally includes humorous touches to make the tool more enjoyable.

How is AI Changing Developers’ Work?

Anthropic believes that its AI models are responsible for 90% of Claude Code’s own production. Wu, a previous engineer, states that she does not write much code herself, but mostly reviews Claude Code’s results.

AI tools were once like autocompletes, but now, through the use of agentic AI assistants like Claude Code, they can carry out assignments on their own. This has turned the developers into supervisors for the AI agents rather than being hands-on in coding.

Still, there are difficulties associated with this transition.  For example, engineers using certain AI tools might actually find that their work has slowed down. This occurs thanks to the time they spend prompting and correcting AI outputs, especially when the codebase is very complex.

What’s Next for the Claude Code Web App?

Anthropic aims to continue growing Claude Code on web and mobile platforms, with the CLI remaining its centerpiece. CEO Dario Amodei has predicted that AI may one day write 90% of software code, but widespread use will take time.
