Two months after Campbell Wilson stepped down as Air India CEO, the shortlist has narrowed to two names: Nipun Aggarwal and Vinod Kannan. The timing is significant. Air India is mid-transformation under Tata Group ownership, with operational and financial pressures still unresolved.

Search for New Chief Began After Wilson's Exit

The hunt for a new CEO began after Campbell Wilson resigned in April before completing his term. According to people familiar with the matter, Wilson had first indicated his desire to leave in December. One of the reasons he reportedly cited to Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran was concerns over New Delhi's poor air quality and pollution levels.

Since then, the Tata Group has been evaluating both internal and external candidates to steer Air India through the next phase of its turnaround strategy.

Nipun Aggarwal Emerges as Strong Internal Candidate

According to a report by the Financial Times, Air India Chief Commercial Officer Nipun Aggarwal has emerged as one of the leading contenders for the top job.

Aggarwal has played a central role in Air India's transformation efforts since the Tata Group acquired the airline. Supporters view him as a disciplined executive with a strong focus on financial management, cost control, and operational efficiency.

However, some industry insiders remain uncertain about whether Aggarwal possesses the experience required to lead a large full-service international airline.

“The airline needs financial discipline, but to lead the company you need other skills as well,” a person familiar with the discussions said.

Vinod Kannan Brings Extensive Airline Leadership Experience

Aggarwal's main challenger is Vinod Kannan, the former CEO of Vistara, the premium full-service carrier that merged with Air India in 2024.

Kannan is widely respected within the aviation industry for overseeing Vistara's growth and operations. His supporters argue that his hands-on experience managing a full-service airline makes him better suited to lead Air India as it seeks to strengthen its global position.

A former Air India director reportedly questioned Aggarwal's candidacy, saying he had “no experience” running the type of full-service carrier Air India aspires to become. That view has helped keep Kannan firmly in contention.

Tata Sons Power Dynamics Complicate Decision

Though there are two main contenders, no final decision has been reached so far.

According to the reports, the process of succession has become entangled in discussions among the leaders at Tata Sons. While it is true that Aggarwal has the backing of Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, it has come to light that Chandrasekaran is not ready to take the final call amid ongoing uncertainty over his own upcoming tenure extension.

The term of Chandrasekaran as the chairman expires in February next year. Even though there is a majority support among the board members for an extension, Noel Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts and the biggest shareholder of Tata Sons, has been against it.

Leadership Choice Seen as Crucial for Air India's Future

The outcome of the CEO recruitment process is likely to have a significant influence on how the future looks for Air India.

With the airline continuing the process of merging the group's former carriers, as well as expanding its international presence and executing a multi-billion-dollar revamp strategy, the new CEO will be under increasing pressure to provide stability and growth.

Until then, all focus remains on the decision by the Tata Group whether to go with Aggarwal's skills in finance and business or with Kannan's experience in airline management.
