At the India AI Impact Summit 2026, OpenAI and the Tata Group announced a partnership to expand large-scale AI infrastructure. This collaboration aims to strengthen India’s AI ecosystem and accelerate adoption across enterprises.
TCS has assured customers that it will support them in deploying, integrating, and scaling OpenAI’s advanced AI platforms worldwide.
Tata Group’s IT services arm, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and OpenAI announced a multi-dimensional strategic partnership on 19 February 2026 at India AI Impact Summit 2026. The partnership aims to promote AI adoption across enterprises, consumer platforms and social impact initiatives in India and overseas.
The two organizations plan to co-develop industry-specific Agentic AI solutions that combine OpenAI’s AI models with TCS's domain expertise. The companies will jointly target Indian and global enterprises to take steps toward a contextualized AI transformation.
The AI infrastructure will be a part of OpenAI's Stargate Project. It is a US$500bn multi-year initiative launched by the AI giant in 2025 to build AI data centres globally for training and inference.
According to the deal, several thousand Tata Group employees will gain access to Enterprise ChatGPT to improve productivity and innovation. TCS will also deploy OpenAI’s Codex capabilities.
TCS’s data centre subsidiary, HyperVault unit, has also entered into a multi-year agreement with OpenAI. It will build an AI-ready infrastructure in India.
In the first phase, TCS will develop 100 megawatts (MW) of AI infrastructure capacity, with plans to scale up to 1 gigawatt (GW). The infrastructure will support next-generation AI workloads.
India has already emerged as one of OpenAI’s fastest-growing markets, with the company saying more than 100 million people in the country use ChatGPT weekly.
Sam Altman, CEO, OpenAI, said, “India is already leading the way in AI adoption, and with its talent, ambition, and strong government support, it is well placed to help shape its future. Through OpenAI for India and our partnership with the Tata Group, we’re working together to build the infrastructure, skills, and local partnerships needed to build AI with India, for India, and in India, so that more people across the country can access and benefit from it.”
OpenAI also confirmed plans to expand its physical presence with new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year.
TCS established HyperVault in 2025 to build gigawatt-scale, green-energy-powered AI infrastructure for hyperscalers and AI-native enterprises. These facilities are designed to include liquid-cooled data centres with high rack density and network connectivity across major cloud regions.
“This deep collaboration between OpenAI and Tata Group marks a major milestone in India’s vision to become a global leader in AI,” said N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons.
He added, “We are pleased to partner with OpenAI to create state-of-the-art AI infrastructure in India. This is a unique opportunity for OpenAI and TCS to transform industries. Together we will skill India’s youth and empower them to succeed in the AI era.”

OpenAI Foundation and TCS will also collaborate on AI upskilling initiatives for Indian youth. The partnership includes developing technology toolkits for NGOs and launching programs that focus on responsible AI adoption. Over 100,000 ChatGPT Edu licenses will be distributed to top institutions to help students develop fluency in practical AI.
The announcement seems to be the company’s most structured India-focused strategy yet, anchored by a major partnership with the Tata Group.
India’s accelerating AI infrastructure buildout reflects a strategic shift in building self-reliance in technologies and gaining an edge in global competitiveness. As partnerships between global AI leaders and Indian conglomerates deepen, the focus is now on scaling compute capacity and strengthening data sovereignty in the global AI infrastructure race.
