Being an avid gamer, especially if one is a PS5 gamer, it is almost impossible that they have never tried God of War. It is one of the iconic action-adventure series by Santa Monica Studios and Sony Interactive Entertainment. Started two decades back, this gaming series has captured a massive audience with its masterfully woven rich tapestry of mythologies. Starting from Greek mythology, Kratos eventually made his way to Norse mythology.
However, this Spartan warrior has destroyed almost all the gods from these two mythologies. At the point where players have been assuming the next mythology for Kratos to land, the industry insiders have been mentioning that again Kratos will get back to his roots in Greek mythology. With this possibility coming to the surface, it’s time to check out the ancient entities that might appear in the game.
Athena is one of those goddesses who have played an important role in Kratos’ saga. Everyone knows that Athena is the Goddess of Wisdom and War, and during Kratos’ journey in the Greek saga, she played a crucial role by serving as both mentor and manipulator. While on one hand, she guided him in his quest against Ares, on the other, especially during the later parts of the game, she manipulated him during his confrontation with Zeus. Though she died in the hands of Kratos, her essence persisted. So, she can make her way back to the upcoming God of War title.
The next Greek character that may make his way to the upcoming title is Morpheus, the God of Dreams. He used to be one of the most unforgettable characters in the God of War universe. This character appeared for a brief period, but he left a long-lasting impact. There are multiple unanswered questions regarding this character; therefore, there’s a massive chance that he may come to the game again. His involvement in the game will take it to a new height.
The next goddess that probably appears in the game will be Artemis, the Goddess of the Hunt. Her appearance once again was not much in the previous titles, but she provided Kratos with the Blade of Artemis to aid him in his quest. After Kratos has destroyed all the prominent figures from the mythology, probably it’s her turn to take a bigger screen time. As a deity, she embodies both the nurturing and ruthless aspects of nature. Most importantly, Artemis could introduce themes like survival, balance, and primal instinct to the game.
Nike, the Winged Goddess of Victory, is another most-anticipated figure who may come to the upcoming game. She has been a silent observer in the original title, but her statues were all over the in-game world. She was an omnipresent character throughout the game but didn’t play an active role in the narrative. Now that Kratos is going back to the Greek saga, she may play a vital role.
Hecate, the Goddess of Magic and Witchcraft, is one of the most prominent figures in the God of War franchise. She has an unchallenged dominance over the mystical arts, and these could be introduced to the game as new gameplay mechanisms. It mostly centered around sorcery and enchantments. Even she fits the narrative as a bridge between Greek and Norse mythologies. Technically, her addition could also bring moral ambiguities of magic to make the gameplay a lot more challenging for Kratos.
At this point, there’s no certainty whether God of War is really returning to Greek mythology or not. If one believes the predictions of the insiders, it seems like the game will revisit the roots, but it may not be. However, if it really gets back to the Greek era once again, there's a potent chance that some of these above-mentioned characters will appear as primary figures.
