On March 22nd, Sony will mark the 20th anniversary of its iconic God of War franchise, a cornerstone of the PlayStation legacy. To commemorate this milestone, Sony has unveiled a series of celebratory initiatives, including new in-game content for God of War Ragnarök, unique merchandise, and an art exhibition. The centerpiece of the celebration is the release of the Dark Odyssey Collection for God of War Ragnarök, offering players a suite of cosmetic enhancements.
A free update, the Dark Odyssey Collection, is set to arrive on PS5 and PC on March 20th. This update introduces a striking black and gold skin for Kratos, reminiscent of his appearance in God of War II. Accompanying this skin is the Dark Odyssey armor set, comprising a breastplate, bracers, and belt. The collection extends beyond Kratos, providing Dark Odyssey-themed armor for his companions, Atreus and Freya. Additionally, the update features Dark Odyssey weapon appearances and attachments for the Leviathan Axe, Blades of Chaos, and Draupnir Spear. Kratos’ shields also receive new appearances, alongside a Dark Odyssey-themed Rond attachment. A fantastic feature of this update is the "Edit Appearance" option, allowing players to customize their weapon and shield attachments visually without affecting their stats.
Beyond the in-game additions, Sony has already made available a 20th-anniversary fan kit, which includes banners, icons, and wallpapers for desktop and mobile devices. On March 20th, Steam users will find anniversary-themed items in the Steam Points Shop, while PS5 gamers will receive a complimentary 20th-anniversary PlayStation Network avatar. Furthermore, Sony has organized a 20th-anniversary art exhibition in Los Angeles, along with the release of new merchandise, a two-volume retrospective book detailing the series' history, art prints, and a limited-edition vinyl set.
PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe/Premium subscribers can access God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök through the Game Catalog, with Premium members also accessing God of War III Remastered through the Classics Catalog.
The update, version 06.02, also brings the patch notes detailing the complete Dark Odyssey Collection. Santa Monica Studio has provided a complete breakdown of the included cosmetics, and the newly added "Edit Appearance" option, allowing for customization without losing stat bonuses. The availability of both God of War titles on PlayStation Plus and PC sales offers a great opportunity for both new and returning players to experience the Norse saga.
While the Dark Odyssey Collection offers many cosmetic upgrades, some fans had hoped for modern remasters of earlier God of War titles. Despite these expectations, Sony has not announced any plans for such remasters. Nevertheless, the company's comprehensive celebration, encompassing in-game content, merchandise, and digital bonuses, underscores its commitment to the God of War franchise and its dedicated fanbase.
