Kratos is visiting Egypt. This is the hottest rumor currently circulating around the God of War community, which has been trying to figure out the next destination of this powerful Spartan Warrior for a long time. Since God of War Ragnarök was released, Sony has gone completely silent about this finest action-adventure franchise. A recent leak has shed some light on the upcoming game’s setting.
The God of War franchise is one of the flagship titles for PlayStation, which was developed by Santa Monica Studios and published by Sony. While the setting and the gameplay of the God of War games have always been praised by fans and critics, the most beloved part of these games is the appearance of Kratos.
Starting from 2005, the God of War games, over the years, recorded the development of Kratos from a brutal slayer to an experienced and affectionate father of Atreus. With each title, players gradually uncovered how this powerful warrior learned from his every encounter and started controlling his killer rage to become a wise leader to guide his son.
The journey of this Spartan warrior began with him slaying the Greek gods. In all the games based on Greek mythology, players have controlled a young Kratos driven by anger. Consequently, once he slayed all the Greek gods, the story moved to Norse mythology.
In the later parts, this slayer gets relatively calm and learns self-control. With God of War Ragnarök, the father-son duo has slayed all the Norse mythological figures. Therefore, there’s no way the next installment is to be set in that same mythological era. As soon as this fact hit, fans started looking for a suitable mythology for the next God of War installment to land.
Since the speculations began, Egyptian mythology was the most voted mythology that players thought would fit the best for Kratos’ next adventure. That’s mostly because Egypt is full of mysteries, and the mythology is enormous.
Proving these speculations almost true, one well-known insider, Daniel Richtman, stated that “Sony is casting Middle Eastern actors for an unknown AAA game, which is likely to be the next God of War that explores Egyptian mythology.”
At the time of writing, neither Sony nor Santa Monica Studios has confirmed any upcoming God of War game. Therefore, this is an entirely speculative comment. Even Richtman himself cleared it out. But that’s enough to excite the entire God of War community.
Rumors often don’t have any basis, but in some cases, rumors come from specific backgrounds. At least, God of War going to Egypt has some grounds. This speculation will easily convince someone who has played the series' previous games. In God of War and God of War Ragnarök, players must have seen mentions of other pantheons around the globe that Tyr has visited, and one of them has Egyptian origin. It kind of confirms that the game has Egyptian mythology tied somewhere in the storyline.
If this rumor is true, there’s a huge scope for the developer team to open new paths for Kratos. The Egyptian mythology has uncountable unsolved mysteries, which will make Kratos’ journey more interesting. If the franchise really shifts to Egypt, the first thing players can expect to see is a well-made presentation of ancient Egypt. Generally, God of War games impress players with visuals. The next installment won’t be an exception.
The next thing that will be exciting for the GoW fans is the representation of Egyptian gods. Egyptian mythology is full of different kinds of gods and mysterious creatures. Santa Monica Studios probably won’t let go of this opportunity. Therefore, during the gameplay, multiple of them will come to encounter Kratos face-to-face in a fight. Expectedly, Anubis, Osiris, Thoth, Isis, Pakhet, etc., will be featured, either as allies or as enemies to Kratos.
Well, there’s another potent possibility that the next GoW game may explore: Atreus becoming the main character. In the previous games, Kratos used to be the main protagonist, with players sometimes switching to Atreus during fights or explorations.
However, if one remembers, in the final scene of God of War Ragnarök, Kratos and Atreus part ways as the son sets off on his adventure to find the Giants. Maybe this search will direct him to Egypt and let him encounter the brutal gods alone without his father’s help.
At this point, there’s no news of any God of War game. Therefore, all these are just assumptions that players have been making based on some rumors.
