The PlayStation State of Play 2025 event exceeded gamers' wildest expectations, fulfilling a long-held desire. Like every year, this event has brought multiple new trailers this year as well, but the surprise came when Gearbox Software’s president, Randy Pitchford, confirmed Borderlands 4 is coming this year. Not only that, the game is coming earlier than expected, on September 23, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
It's been a few hours since this announcement was made, and already the Borderlands community is boiling with curiosity regarding the gameplay and in-game features. So, here’s a quick look at what the trailer showed.
Veteran Borderlands players are aware that these games always take place in Pandora. The world of Pandora is pretty familiar to them at this point. However, abandoning that usual setting, this time, the developer team has decided to take players to a new terrain, which is the new planet of Kairos.
The trailer showed it as the deadliest planet in the world of Borderlands. Kairos is ruled with an iron fist by a dictator named the Timekeeper. His utopian regime is shaken to its core by a world-shattering disaster, causing chaos to spread throughout the world. Gamers will light the fire of a rebellion and fight through cybernetic monstrosities, murderous bandits, and savage creatures on their way to discovering hidden alien riches.
Vault Hunters are the protagonists in Borderlands, and the upcoming game will bring four new Vault Hunters, each with new abilities and skills. The most interesting part is that during the announcement, Gearbox mentioned that these are going to be the deepest and most diverse skill trees that any Borderlands title has ever received.
That's just half of the gameplay. There are additional mechanics, such as double jumping, gliding, dodging, and a fixed-point grappling hook, enabling more dynamic combat and exploration.
No matter what new features this game has brought, Gearbox Games never forgets the looter-shooter roots of this franchise. Therefore, Borderlands 4 is claimed to have introduced a widespread loot system where tons of deadly weapons will be featured. Even so, this upcoming title promises to deliver the most hardcore guns and loot in the series' history, ensuring that players have all the tools they need to wreak havoc across Kairos.
Borderlands 4 boasts an open world with no loading screens between areas, inviting players to explore and become immersed. The game will have both single and multiplayer options. Therefore, if one is ready to play alone, that’s okay; otherwise, they can invite friends to jump into this hostile world and tackle enemies. Well, joining forces actually makes the fight against Timekeeper easier. Anyway, solo players can also do it, so don’t worry.
Like every other installment, Borderlands 4 brings an eccentric cast of characters that includes both old and new characters. However, the best part is all these characters are connected to the storyline. They are not randomly introduced characters. However, the narrative revolves around the Vault Hunters, making them the central figures of the storyline. The world is designed in a way that suits the gameplay and the storyline completely.
The State of Play trailer is the first look fans received of this upcoming Borderlands installment, but that’s not enough. Fans are curious about a full gameplay reveal. Fortunately, that’s scheduled for Fall 2025. Once that comes, the community will receive a more in-depth look at the game and gameplay, which will shed light on some of the special Borderlands 4 features, like the game's mechanics, environments, and character abilities, in greater detail.
That’s everything that players can find out from the latest announcement trailer. This is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated releases that are going to take place this September with a new setting, narrative, and some other features. However, still, players have to wait until its global launch to know more about this game.
