Microsoft will formally end the free standard support for Windows 10 from Tuesday. Even after the release of Windows 11 in 2021, approximately 40% of Windows users still rely on Windows 10.
After October 14, 2025, the older Microsoft operating system will no longer receive security patches or support for technical issues. Although devices will continue to function, they will become more susceptible to cyberattacks and malware.
Experts say that continued use of Windows 10 keeps computers vulnerable to hackers exploiting known flaws. Lisa Barber, editor of Which? warned, ‘Criminals are going to exploit weaknesses and steal data.’
In the UK alone, around 5 million users are likely to continue using Windows 10 and potentially risk losing personal data, passwords, and sensitive documents. Globally, the threat is magnified as older devices become increasingly vulnerable to cybercriminals.
The easiest course of action is to upgrade to Windows 11, which provides enhanced security by default. Laptops under four years old have the minimum requirements: 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, and a TPM 2.0 chip.

For computers that cannot run Windows 11, Microsoft offers a one-year extended security update, valid until October 13, 2026. It can be accessed for free using a Microsoft account; otherwise, it will cost $30 or 1,000 reward points.
Alternatively, users can utilize Linux distributions like Ubuntu or Google's ChromeOS Flex, which continue to receive security updates. Backing up files before changing operating systems is essential, as the installation process may overwrite data.

If upgrading the software or switching cannot be done, then purchasing a new Windows 11 computer is a feasible option. To make this transition easier for users, retailers and manufacturers often provide trade-in programs or refurbish the devices at lower prices.
As the end of Windows 10 support approaches, millions of users are facing a difficult choice: either upgrading, switching to a different operating system, or risking their computers becoming infected through exposure to malware and other cyberattacks.
