After having some time to play through the new Pokémon games Scarlet and Violet, fans were not happy with the design of the 1000th Pokémon. Cheese string dude? Applejacks mascot? C3PO looking-ass? Who's mans is this?

Meet Gholdengo. Some fans were quick to point out its visual similarity to a techy crypto bro, gold all over and rocking a little fanny pack. It also seems to metaphorically embody crypto bros with the way it evolves.

In this article, I will be looking at Gholdengo's design and looking at why fans were unimpressed by it. I will then look at a new meme coin, Big Eyes' (BIG) design see whether it measures up to the gold standard of cute creatures set by Pokémon.

Who's That Pokémon?

Gholdengo's name was originally rumoured to be Ethaurum, but alas, it wasn't to be.

The way in which you evolve its previous form Gimmeghoul into Gholdengo is by feeding it 1000 coins, which are dropped when you defeat a Gimmeghoul in battle. The process of collecting coins was seen by some fans as a parallel to or metaphor for Bitcoin mining. Whether this is a subtle dig at crypto bros, or a way for Gamefreak to incorporate a revolutionary new cultural and financial invention into their monster designs is open for interpretation.

One thing that is clear though, fans are not happy. Some fans voiced their disdain for the design by comparing it to the cheese string mascot, and the Apple Jacks mascot

Especially as the 1000th Pokémon, fans were upset that such a big milestone spot was given to this walking cheese man. There were two ways Gamefreak could've gone – they could've gone with a super cute, super timeless design similar to the Pikachu clones in each generation, or they could've opted for a super badass awe-inspiring legendary design that symbolises Pokémon's progression from 151 creatures.

Big Eyes – Reminiscent Of The Simpler Days

The mascot of the new meme coin Big Eyes (BIG) is doing something a lot of the new Pokémon designs lack – simplicity and cuteness. Big Eyes has taken inspiration from anime and made its cute cat look timeless. There are not a million things going on, the design doesn't look goofy or weird, it's just cute! Plain and simple. At Big Eyes, cuteness is a big part of the team's philosophy, they believe that cuteness is currency. We have seen this philosophy in action with Gamefreak and Pokémon. Like Pikachu, with a simple, cute design people are able to rally behind the mascot and support its endeavours. Pokémon's branding power that has come from their simpler, cuter designs have given them incredible momentum, and even though their recent games have been panned as technical failures, they are setting records for the most amount of copies of a game sold in Nintendo's history.

Final Thoughts

Pokémon's 1000th design was something that many fans hated. Though it could be a subtle dig at a certain type of crypto investor, it does show an awareness of the space from Gamefreak and Nintendo. Perhaps in the future, we could get an NFT-based Pokémon game like Axie Infinity. Just please no more Gholdengos.
