India has made many decisive steps in the space tech sector, shifting from being hesitant to invest in space missions to achieving major milestones like the Chandrayaan-3 mission in 2024. With this global attention on the safe landing on the moon, the growth in the space industry has been fueled by the strong support of the government.
In 2022 the first private rocket Vikram-S launch has been a major boost to get government support for private space tech players in the form of funding, technology upgradation, and infrastructure. Additionally, the GST council has introduced a 0% GST to help the spacetech startups and more than a ton of startups have registered with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
The Indian Spacetech startups have raised more than $320 million since 2020. By 2033, the Indian government is aiming to create a $44 billion space industry. Notably, ISRO Chairman S Somnath has indicated that the space agency in India will expect up to a 30% increase in its budget in the upcoming years.
Skyroot Aerospace- Founded in 2018, this Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace specializes in making cost-effective, non-reusable rockets called Vikram which is designed to launch small satellites. It became the first private Indian company to partner with ISRO and launched Vikram-S, which is also India’s first privately built rocket. The organization aims to make frequent launches by 2025 with rockets that require less infrastructure and are launch-ready within 72 hours.
Bellatrix Aerospace- Founder in 2015 in Bangalore, this tech company focuses on satellite propulsion and orbital manoeuvring. It recently tested its Hall Effect Thruster which is a fuel-efficient electric propulsion engine. In 2021, it partnered with Skyroot to fly its Orbital Transfer Vehicle (OTV) on Vikram I rockets.
Dhruva Space- Dhruva Space Specializes in satellites and offers a complete suite of solutions starting from platforms and launches to ground services. Dhurva was also among the first to sign an MoU within IN-SPACe and has also partnered with Skyroot, NSIL, and French companies to expand its capabilities
1. Apollo Micro Systems Ltd- Specialises in high-precision electronic systems for aerospace and defence that support satellite and launch vehicle technology.
2. Azad Engineering Ltd- Manufactures complex components for turbines and engines for the Aerospace, energy and defence sectors in partnership with global giants like GE and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
3. Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL)- An aerospace leader and defence that offers advanced electronic systems and radars for India’s satellite and space programs.
4. Hindustan Aeronautical Ltd (HAL)- An important contributor to space exploration who expertise in aircraft, avionics, and propulsion systems. It is a government-owned entity for India’s aerospace and defence initiatives
5. Dreamfolks Service Ltd- They provide satellite communication and connectivity solutions for the space-tech industry. This organisation is positioned as a player in satellite-based services with demands increasing daily.
India’s space tech sector is rapidly growing, driven by strong government support and private sector innovation. With milestones like Chandrayaan-3 and the launch of private rockets such as Vikram-S, India is becoming a key player in space exploration. The goal of a $44 billion space industry by 2033 highlights the country's ambition for continued growth and global collaboration in the space industry.
