When buying a smartphone, smartwatch, or wireless earphones, IP67, IP68, and IP69 ratings often appear alongside other specifications. While many users assume a higher number automatically means better protection, each rating serves a different purpose.
IP stands for Ingress Protection and indicates how well a device protects against dust and liquids. The first digit indicates protection against solid particles, while the second indicates water resistance. For IP67, IP68, and IP69, the first digit is 6, meaning complete protection against dust. The difference comes from their water-resistance capabilities.
IP67 is among the most widely used certifications for smartphones and other wearable gadgets. An electronic device that meets the IP67 standard is completely dust-resistant and can be immersed in freshwater up to 1 meter for 30 minutes.
The IP67 rating is therefore ideal for common occurrences like dropping the smartphone in the sink, exposure to rainwater, and water spillage. This standard, however, cannot be used for swimming or underwater photography.
IP67 is ideal for everyday users and for smartphones that are not top-end.
IP68 is much more resistant to immersion than IP67. It serves as the standard for practically all premium phones in 2026.
No depth standards exist for IP68. Different manufacturers test their products differently; some phones are tested to a depth of 1.5 m, whereas others are tested to a depth of 2 m or more. The customer should therefore check the manufacturer's specs.
IP68 is perfect for rainy conditions, accidental spills, beach/poolside use in freshwater environments, and durability.
The key feature of IP69 protection is resistance to jetting, high-temperature water spray, and high-pressure water from all sides. IP69 is often found in rugged smartphones and machinery that needs to be regularly cleaned with water under pressure.
It should be noted that IP69 does not provide better underwater protection than IP68.
IP69 will be useful mainly for construction workers, factory workers, people working outside, and owners of rugged smartphones.
The selection of an appropriate rating depends on how the device will be used. The IP67 rating is ideal for protection against rain, water spills, and light splashes of fresh water. The IP68 rating appears preferable to most smartphone consumers seeking greater water resistance. IP69 rating works best in cases where there is use of strong water jets and intensive cleaning.
It should be remembered that any IP-rated smartphone is not completely waterproof. IP ratings are based on specific test conditions, and liquid damage may be outside the manufacturer’s warranty coverage.
IP68 appears to be the most balanced rating for dust protection and water resistance.
