The UCSF Library Data Science team is offering a comprehensive workshop series on Python, SQL, and AI – three powerful tools that are changing how data is processed and analysed. As technology continues to shape the professional landscape, these skills have become increasingly valuable for professionals across all fields, not just those in technical roles.

What's Being Offered?

From April 4 to June 13, 2025, UCSF is hosting ten Friday workshops designed for individuals interested in using Python for real-world data analysis. These sessions cover various applications from health information analysis to document processing and image examination, teaching practical skills with immediate applications. The instructors focus on real-world applications rather than abstract concepts, making the material relevant to actual work or research scenarios.

The sessions are free and open to University of California researchers, staff, and students. Attendance options include in-person at the UCSF FAMRI Library at Mission Bay or online via Zoom from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM PT. This hybrid format makes learning accessible regardless of location or schedule constraints.

Workshop Content

The workshop series progresses from fundamentals to advanced applications. April sessions establish core Python programming and SQL database foundations, teaching data manipulation, visualisation creation, and information extraction techniques.

Workshops in the month of May focus on practical applications including COVID testing data analysis and document library programming interfaces. These sessions connect basic coding to advanced concepts through work with actual datasets.

The next sessions will start to introduce some of the key machine learning concepts, such as feature importance, random forest, and natural language processing, in layman's terms. Workshops in June will cover text, image, audio, and video analytics on pre-trained AI models.

Each of them offers hands-on coding practice rather than demonstrations. The series is accommodating to total beginners and people new to coding languages and encourages attendance in individual topics within the series.

Instructors for the Workshops

Geoffrey Boushey and other proficient trainers lead the workshops. Boushey has worked as a Software Application Developer with the UCSF Library Data Science team. He is well-trusted because of his vast experience in those areas, particularly with Python, SQL, and associated technologies. When taught, he ensures the tutorial session is accessible and encourages support, thus allowing a more accommodating learning environment for individuals with all skill levels.

Why These Skills Matter in 2025

Python, SQL, and AI skills extend beyond tech specialists in today's job market. Python is known for being an easy introductory programming language for all those wishing to set a foundation in data analysis, web development, and task automation. SQL has been seen so far as the lingua franca for data management in organisations worldwide and allows complex data designing and querying.

AI in the Quantitative Domain flourishes in recognising complex patterns within datasets better than humans ever could have manually. The ability to leverage these technologies creates significant advantages across numerous professional sectors. Potential job opportunities in these skill areas are almost countless and could be found in such areas as healthcare, finance, research, and education. Industry reports indicate higher compensation with long-term job security for data analysis.

Other Learning Opportunities

Some alternative venues are available to avoid scheduling conflicts: the University of Arizona DataLab workshops feature Classical Machine Learning and AI Applications, and UT Dallas's Data Analytics Bootcamp begins May 13 and covers Python, SQL, and generative AI. ODSC West 2025 conference, meanwhile, throws back hands-on workshops at focused skill-building.

Registration Information

Registration is required for each workshop through the UCSF Library website. Interested participants can select preferred sessions through a straightforward registration process. For more registration information, kindly email Geoffrey Boushey at geoffrey.boushey@ucsf.edu.

These workshops are an introduction to data science and AI in terms of career upgrades, research enhancement, and skills development. The springtime investment in these technical capabilities has potential for significant professional benefits.
