X suffered a widespread outage on Monday, February 16, 2026, and many users could not access the platform. People reported blank timelines, slow loading, and problems posting on the app and website. Downdetector, which tracks user-submitted disruption reports, recorded a sharp jump during the morning in the United States.

Downdetector logged more than 41,000 reports at about 8:40 a.m. ET. The count later fell fast, signaling a partial recovery for many accounts. X did not provide an immediate public explanation for the service disruption.

Downdetector Data Shows a Fast-Moving X Outage in the United States

Downdetector’s chart showed the outage built from a small trickle into a large spike. The site recorded about 41,000 reports around 8:40 a.m. ET. It then showed 28,673 reports by 9:09 a.m. ET. The count dropped again to 17,360 by 9:19 a.m. ET. It fell further to about 1,245 by 9:49 a.m. ET.

The number reflects reports, and not confirmed affected users. However, it helps map the disruption’s intensity and timing. Another Downdetector snapshot showed more than 23,210 reports in the United States and the United Kingdom at 8:24 a.m. ET. The figure came earlier than the peak, so totals varied by timestamp.

Downdetector’s heatmap showed the strongest concentration of reports in the United States. It highlighted major metro areas, including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. The pattern suggested a broad service issue rather than a single local outage.

Twitter Down Reports Spread Across the UK and Other Regions

Users outside the United States also reported problems with Elon Musk’s X. Downdetector showed thousands of complaints in the United Kingdom during the same window. Reports also appeared in other countries as users described feeds that failed to refresh.

Connectivity monitor NetBlocks tracked the incident and pointed away from national internet blocks. “Not related to country-level internet disruptions or filtering,” NetBlocks said while monitoring access to the service.

Some users regained access quickly, while others reported lingering slowness. Downdetector’s counts fell across the morning, which suggested the platform restored service for many regions. X did not respond to early media requests for comment.

Cloudflare Status Notices Coincide, But the Cause Remains Unclear

Cloudflare posted a status update on February 16 about elevated latency affecting a subset of HTTP requests in its Newark, New Jersey, data center. The notice said some customers using Cloudflare’s Data Loss Prevention suite could see intermittent errors for traffic in that data center.

Cloudflare’s status page also listed a separate incident involving increased HTTP errors in Mumbai on February 16. The page said Cloudflare resolved that incident later the same day. Available information did not confirm a direct connection between those issues and the X outage.

X has dealt with repeated disruptions in recent months. Fox Business noted outages in mid-January and again in November 2025, with the 2025 issue tied to a Cloudflare outage. Downdetector also showed brief X outages on January 22 and February 1, 2026, with report spikes that later eased.
