GEM Hospital & Research Centre celebrates this year’s World Cancer Day with a quiet but meaningful shift toward digital patient care. At its campus in Coimbatore, the hospital launched an AI-powered cancer chatbot, which enables patients and their caregivers to access trustworthy medical information.
The move reflects a growing recognition that for many people, the first questions about cancer arise outside hospital walls, which occur between midnight and dawn when people experience their most intense fears.
The chatbot named Dr. GEM functions as a tool that provides answers to frequently asked questions about cancer-related symptoms and screening methods, treatment procedures, and post-treatment rehabilitation. The hospital staff used the launch event to show how the tool presents evidence-based information through easy-to-understand, comforting explanations.
The chatbot operates continuously throughout the day to provide initial support to users who need assistance but cannot find a doctor.
Doctors at GEM Hospital claim that misinformation is still one of the biggest challenges in cancer care. Various online random search methods confuse patients and increase their anxiety during periods when they feel uncertain about their health condition.
The chatbot provides medically verified answers, which serve as its initial point of clarity to help users understand their screening needs and better interact with their medical professionals.
The gathering brought together clinicians, hospital leadership, and guests from scientific and public service backgrounds. Speakers emphasized that technology should support human care instead of making it obsolete; they also established compassion and trust, together with transparent communication, as vital elements for successful treatment.

Hospital executives described their chatbot system development as a component of their initiative to combine artificial intelligence technology with patient-centered healthcare delivery. The event also honored cancer survivors, reinforcing the hospital’s focus on awareness, resilience, and long-term support.
GEM Hospital implements its digital health program to show that artificial intelligence should function as a healthcare tool that provides immediate help during critical situations.
