WhatsApp is rolling out a recharge feature that lets users top up their mobile numbers directly in the app. This is being done through a phased process for Android and iOS apps, with the aim of reducing dependence on other recharge services.
This comes as a huge boost for WhatsApp’s payment initiative in India. With each passing day, WhatsApp is offering more services to engage and retain users.
The feature is compatible with leading telecom service providers such as Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, and reaches most prepaid customers in India.
WhatsApp enables users to make payments via the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and debit and credit cards. WhatsApp has partnered with PayU to handle all transactions behind the scenes.
All users can access the feature by clicking the ₹ button on the app’s homepage. Apart from bill payments and metro tickets, the financial services area will now get another addition, mobile recharge.

Recharging can be done by going to the Payments menu and clicking the Recharge Mobile tab. One can enter a mobile number, select the operator and circle, and choose from the available plans.
The user is then prompted to make a payment by any desired mode. Once authenticated, you will be shown a confirmation screen with the plan details, and it will be added to your payment history.
It should be noted that WhatsApp will not provide any cancellation or reversal facility after a successful transaction. In the event of a transaction failure, the company promises to provide a refund within a couple of business days.
In case of delayed refunds, users can contact PayU customer care. This feature reflects WhatsApp’s efforts to establish itself as a one-stop solution for digital communication and transactions.
