X, the social media site previously known as Twitter, saw a temporary but mass outage in India late Tuesday, July 23. The outage started at about 11:43 PM IST, with an increase in user complaints mainly concerning the desktop version of the website.
More than 3,000 users reported being unable to access the service at the issue’s peak, said tracking website Downdetector. Approximately 74% of the complaints were attributed to the site, while 23% reported Twitter problems, and a small percentage reported server problems.
Users attempting to access X through browsers received error messages or empty timelines. The mobile app, however, worked mostly without issue, although some also faced lag in viewing feeds and notifications.
The social media crash was more noticeable in big metro cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.
Though the company has not made an official comment at the time of going to print, engineers who have worked on the backend of the platform characterized it as a “transient server configuration issue.”
Global outages monitors like IsItDownRightNow, Site24x7, and DownForEveryoneOrJustMe also picked up temporary irregularities in the platform’s responsiveness. Services had stabilized by 12:30 AM IST, though, with the majority of users able to access without the necessity of updates or re-login.
“Twitter seems to have a bad night,” posted a user, addressing Elon Musk and with the hashtag TwitterDown, which soon started trending on Indian timelines.
It is not the first time that an X outage has occurred since Twitter was rebranded by Elon Musk. Other disruptions earlier included issues with tweet visibility, feed algorithms, and login attempts.
Tech experts observe that the platform’s greater use of third-party APIs and drive towards monetized features could be adding to backend instability.
“Too frequent downtime, no longer a user hassle, but an issue of trust,” wrote a Bengaluru-based app developer who monitors social media platform uptime.
X, formerly Twitter, was back in full operation on both web and mobile platforms in India on Wednesday. Users could post, reload feeds, and view notifications as usual.
Although normality has been restored, the absence of a proper statement from X’s technical team has left users guessing what was the original cause.
Up until now, the social media giant has remained mum, but for Indian users, the platform has resumed, scrolling business as usual.
