Tech Mahindra has rejected viral claims that it plans to lay off about 30,000 employees. The company called the reports circulating on social media false and said no such proposal exists.

In a filing to the stock exchanges on Monday, March 9, 2026, the IT services firm said certain posts on social media platforms had created speculation about a large-scale workforce reduction. The company clarified that these claims have no basis.

What Did The Company Clarify?

Tech Mahindra said it issued the clarification to address rumours spreading online.

“The company considers it necessary to clarify to the Stock Exchanges that no such proposal is under consideration and categorically denies such market rumours,” the filing said.

The rumours began circulating after several posts on the social media platform X suggested that the company could cut thousands of jobs. Some posts linked the alleged layoffs to the growing adoption of artificial intelligence across the technology industry.

One widely shared claim suggested that nearly 30,000 employees could lose their jobs. The speculation quickly gained traction online and triggered concern among employees and industry observers.

Workforce Remains Stable

Tech Mahindra’s latest quarterly disclosures show the company employs close to 1.5 lakh people worldwide. The headcount has remained broadly stable in recent quarters.

The company’s clarification indicates that there are no immediate plans for a large workforce reduction.

Focus On AI And New Projects

Even as it rejected the layoff rumours, Tech Mahindra continues to invest in artificial intelligence initiatives. The company recently partnered with Microsoft to develop an ontology-driven agentic AI platform. The initiative aims to accelerate telecom and enterprise data modernisation.

Management has earlier said the company is focusing on improving productivity across projects.

Executives explained that employees working on fixed-price contracts may be moved from completed projects and reassigned to new assignments. The company described this as redeployment rather than workforce reduction.

The clarification comes at a time when AI adoption is reshaping the global technology sector and fuelling speculation about potential job disruptions in the IT services industry.
