Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the largest IT services firm in India, has shared a major update on its workforce management. The company revealed that nearly half of its internal job assignments are now handled through AI-driven recommendations.

Previously, moving employees from one project to another was a task handled mostly by human managers and staffing teams. Now, TCS is using an internal talent marketplace that relies on software to bridge the gap between project demand and available staff. This shift is part of a larger effort by the company to use artificial intelligence across its entire business, from hiring and training to HR support.

Why This Shift Matters for Employees

Internal moves are a huge part of life at a large IT company. Getting assigned to the right project can determine an employee’s pay growth, promotion chances, and the new skills they learn. Using AI to speed up this process could save workers time waiting for their next assignment. It also helps ensure that their specific skills are matched with the projects that need them most.

At the end of March 2026, TCS had over 5.8 lakh employees. Managing such a large group requires a lot of coordination. While the company saw its headcount grow by 2,000 people in the last quarter, it also noticed an attrition rate of 13.7%. Using AI helps the company stay efficient even as people join or leave the firm.

Benefits for the Company and Investors

For TCS, using AI for staffing is about more than just technology; it is about better business results. Quicker project matching means the company can meet client deadlines faster and keep its workers productive. This efficiency is very important for maintaining healthy profit margins in the competitive IT sector.

Investors are also keeping a close eye on these changes. While many people focus on how much money AI generates from clients, its use within the company is just as important. If AI can help manage the ‘bench’, i.e., the workers waiting for projects more effectively, it could lead to better productivity across the board. TCS continues to move more workplace tasks to software-led systems. The role of AI in shaping professional careers is only expected to grow from here on.
