Google CEO Sundar Pichai has announced the Gemini era for Gmail. The tech giant also unveiled AI-powered features to make email smarter, faster, and more intuitive. This move signals Google’s broader push to embed Gemini AI across its core products.
Sundar Pichai, CEO at Google and Alphabet, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “We launched Gmail on April Fool’s Day in 2004. 20+ years later, we’re bringing Gmail into the Gemini era. AI Overviews, Suggested personalized replies, Proof read, AI Inbox with new streamlined views and suggested topics to catch-up on and loads more.”
Google has officially unveiled the Gemini era, with a new suite of AI-powered features. It is designed to make email more intelligent, conversational, and efficient.
At the core of the update is Gemini-powered AI Overviews. It will automatically summarize long email threads and surface key points. Users can also ask questions directly within an email conversation. It will provide key details such as deadlines, action items, and decisions, without scrolling through multiple replies.
Google mentioned in its blog post: “AI Overviews turn information into answers without the digging. When you open an email with dozens of replies, Gmail synthesizes the entire conversation into a concise summary of key points.”
“And when you ask your inbox a question, we use Gemini to generate a simple AI Overview with the answer. AI Overview conversation summaries are rolling out today for everyone at no cost. The ability to ask your inbox questions with AI Overviews is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers,” the post added.
Google is also expanding its writing and response tools. Suggested personalised replies use Gemini to draft more context-aware responses that reflect the conversation's tone and intent.
The Help Me Write feature can generate complete email drafts from simple prompts. Its Proofread feature will offer enhanced grammar, clarity, and tone suggestions to help you communicate more effectively.
AI Inbox, which is currently being tested with select users, introduces streamlined inbox views to highlight priority emails. It will suggest relevant topics, upcoming meetings, tasks, and time-sensitive messages.

Google said the new Gmail experience is designed with privacy protections through its latest Gemini AI models. Gmail is evolving from a traditional inbox into an AI-powered assistant with these changes.
While basic thread summaries will be available to all Gmail users, the interactive Q&A functionality will be offered through Google’s paid AI subscription tiers. Advanced writing tools will be exclusive to paid users.
The rollout begins in English, with wider availability across regions and languages planned in the coming months.
