Samsung has launched its new Galaxy XR headset at $1,800, almost half the price of Apple’s $3,499 Vision Pro. The device is built with Google and Qualcomm and runs on Android XR. It is designed to make mixed reality technology easier and more affordable.
The Galaxy XR is lighter and more comfortable than Apple’s headset. It weighs just 545 grams compared to Vision Pro, which is 750 grams. The straps are adjustable, and the headset is made for long use without discomfort.
The device uses a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, which gives smooth performance for both virtual and augmented reality apps. It has dual high-resolution cameras, six external sensors for tracking surroundings, and advanced hand and eye tracking.
A key feature of the Galaxy XR is the built-in Gemini AI that lets users control apps with voice commands, gestures, and touch. It also makes using apps easier and more interactive.
The battery lasts up to 2.5 hours per charge. The headset uses an external battery pack and can hold prescription lenses for people who need them. Optional accessories include a carrying case and controllers, each costing $250.
Samsung is selling the Galaxy XR in the US and South Korea through its stores and website. More stores may start selling it later, but fitting prescription lenses may slow the expansion.
Compared to Apple’s Vision Pro, the Galaxy XR is lighter and more affordable, while offering many advanced features. Its Android XR platform and Gemini AI make it a good choice for creators and tech enthusiasts. Samsung is also planning smart glasses with Google, which will work alongside the Galaxy XR.
Overall, the Galaxy XR gives people a chance to experience mixed reality without paying the high price of Apple’s headset. It could attract more users to this growing technology.
