India-Pakistan relations have become increasingly strained of late. Military confrontations and cross-border terrorism have escalated massively. One of the most vigorous responses to the horrendous Pahalgam terror attack is India's Operation Sindoor. The operation followed as a response to the attack in the Baisaran valley that claimed 26 lives.
The terror attack on civilians and pilgrims shocked the area. In retaliation, India made precision strikes to destroy terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Operation Sindoor was a direct response to these mounting threats from large terrorist organizations.
The major objective of Operation Sindoor was to undermine terrorist infrastructure. India sought to accomplish this with minimal civilian casualties. India sought to target the locations of the militants with strategic value using loitering munitions and kamikaze drones. Referred to as loitering munitions and kamikaze drones, but essentially, they are precision weapons with the ability to hit specific militant locations, even through the trees.
The military strategy was to disrupt terrorist networks, but without being at war on a scale that invoked military commanders' ambition.
One of the most notable features of Operation Sindoor is the use of loitering munitions, often referred to as "suicide drones." These munitions are made to loiter in an area for a while before striking at the optimal moment. Loitering munitions differ from conventional missiles.
While flying, these munitions can be commanded to strike a target when it is ready, allowing the Indian military to strike high-value assets with a degree of extreme precision. This allows the Indian military to strike specifically while minimizing collateral damage.
Kamikaze drones are playing a significantly larger role in Operation Sindoor's operational capabilities. Kamikaze drones contain explosive payloads and fly directly to their target, allowing them to be destroyed; the kamikaze provides a lethal blow.
If employed as intended, India can eliminate high-value targets with swift and efficient attacks. The use of such drones indicates the growing reliance on cutting-edge technology that the Indian military is putting into its defense strategy.
India executed several air strikes against the major targets of militants in PoK. The air strikes targeted locations of terrorist training camps, logistics lines, and communication infrastructure. India was able to neutralize high-profile terrorists through the interaction of loitering munitions and kamikaze drones. The operation crippled Pakistan's means to finance terror in the area.
Operation Sindoor is also an advancement toward precision warfare. The observations made by both the loitering munition and kamikaze drone showed India's bettered defence capability. This operation showed an important precedent of India's readiness to defend its sovereignty. The future tension(s) still exist; it will be how India proceeds in defence technology, which will shape the security development going forward.
