OpenAI has appointed former Uber India and South Asia President Prabhjeet Singh as its Managing Director for India, underscoring the company’s growing focus on one of its fastest-expanding markets. Singh will be joining the AI startup in September as the company's most senior executive in the country.
This appointment is timely as OpenAI increases its presence in India amid growing demand for generative AI solutions from businesses, developers, and consumers in the country. The company views India as a key market where it can expand AI adoption and build partnerships.
In his new role, Singh will lead OpenAI’s operations in India, overseeing consumer growth, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, regulatory matters, and business performance. Additionally, he will collaborate with different organizations in the public and private sectors to increase the adoption of artificial intelligence in the country.
Singh will report to Kiran Mani, OpenAI’s Managing Director for the Asia-Pacific region, who was recently appointed to spearhead the company's regional expansion.
Singh recently stepped down as President of Uber India and South Asia after spending more than a decade with the ride-hailing company. In his five years with the company, starting in 2015, he has been influential in expanding Uber’s presence, adding mobility services, and building Uber’s footprint in India and nearby regions.
Singh had been working in strategy and business development before being appointed to head Uber, winning accolades for making the ride-hailing giant grow in its most challenging market.
