NVIDIA has made a major investment in Thinking Machines Lab, the artificial intelligence startup founded by Mira Murati. The partnership signals a new phase in the race to build powerful frontier AI models.

According to reports, the agreement includes the deployment of at least 1 gigawatt of NVIDIA's advanced AI chips. These processors will power training systems and large-scale AI computing infrastructure. Industry observers view the project as one of the largest AI infrastructure commitments in recent years.

The partnership also covers joint work on AI training systems. Engineers from both companies plan to design platforms that run and deploy next-generation models with greater efficiency. Financial details of the NVIDIA investment remain undisclosed. However, analysts expect the chip supply deal to reach tens of billions of dollars.

The announcement arrived days before NVIDIA’s annual developer gathering, the GTC conference in San Jose. Investors reacted quickly. NVIDIA shares moved higher following the news, reflecting strong confidence in the company’s growing AI ecosystem.

Fast Growth for Thinking Machines Lab

Thinking Machines Lab launched in February 2025 after Mira Murati stepped away from leadership at OpenAI. The startup moved rapidly in its first year. A funding round in July 2025 raised $2 billion and pushed the company's valuation to nearly $12 billion.

Major investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, NVIDIA, AMD, Accel, ServiceNow, Cisco, and Jane Street joined the funding round. The capital helped Thinking Machines Lab recruit leading AI researchers and expand its computing capacity.

Murati has formed a strong technical team that includes former OpenAI researchers John Schulman, Barret Zoph, and Luke Metz. The group focuses on multimodal systems that combine text, images, and other data formats.

Murati has often described the company's aim to build AI that interacts with people naturally. Conversation, visual understanding, and real-world context form the core design approach.

The startup has already introduced tools that allow developers to customize models for specialized tasks. These platforms allow companies to adapt frontier AI models to industry needs, including research, software development, and automation.

NVIDIA Expands Its AI Influence

The new NVIDIA investment continues a broader strategy. The chipmaker has built financial and technology ties with several leading AI companies. Investments have reached firms developing large-scale models and generative AI platforms.

NVIDIA has previously backed startups such as OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Mistral AI. These deals usually combine funding with long-term supply agreements for AI chips.

The partnership with Thinking Machines Lab will rely heavily on NVIDIA’s new Vera Rubin computing platform. The architecture entered production in early 2026. The system combines several specialized processors designed for AI workloads.

Engineers expect major performance gains from the platform. Early projections suggest a lower cost per token during AI inference when compared with the current Blackwell architecture.

Industry analysts see the collaboration as strategic. Thinking Machines Lab gains massive computing power. NVIDIA strengthens its role as the backbone of modern AI development.

Both companies will highlight their plans soon. Mira Murati will appear with NVIDIA’s CEO Jensen Huang during the upcoming GTC conference. The discussion will focus on the future of open frontier models and the next stage of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
