Nintendo has pulled off a stunning comeback in the gaming world. The launch of the Switch 2 console has lifted its quarterly revenue to new heights, doubling the previous year’s numbers and pushing the company into record-breaking territory.
For the April to June 2025 quarter, Nintendo recorded revenue of 572.3 billion yen (around $3.8 billion), marking a whopping 132% jump compared to the same period last year. Net profit reached 96.03 billion yen ($636.9 million), showing a 19% year-on-year increase. Much of this rise came from the explosive performance of Switch 2.
Switch 2 sales continue to break records! Launched in early June at $449.99, Switch 2 quickly stole the spotlight. It sold over 3.5 million units in just four days and ended the quarter with 5.82 million shipped units. These numbers make it the fastest-selling console in Nintendo's history. The hybrid console blends handheld and TV play, featuring a sharper display, faster processing, and unique mouse-like controller support.
Nintendo's success was also helped by the absence of heavy competition. The delayed release of Grand Theft Auto VI worked in Nintendo’s favor, allowing Switch 2 to dominate the gaming space. With hit games like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza, the software side also contributed strongly, delivering over 8.67 million games sold in the same quarter.
Despite this performance, Nintendo has kept its annual forecast steady. It expects to sell 15 million Switch 2 units by March 2026. Some analysts say this goal looks modest, with 40% already achieved in one quarter. Nintendo, however, is cautious, as it faces challenges like rising US tariffs on Vietnam-made products.
Nintendo’s stock has climbed 40% in 2025, showing strong investor faith in Switch 2’s appeal. While there’s pressure to maintain momentum, especially once early adopters have made their purchases, new releases from major franchises like Pokémon and Metroid are expected to sustain interest.
The original Switch, launched in 2017, became the pandemic poster-child for gaming. Its sales had crossed 153 million units, thus stating the biggest sales of any gaming console ever. The fact that Switch 2 is getting a better start once again finds Nintendo setting the stage for gaming.
Industry observers now watch whether Nintendo can turn this launch into a long-term win. But one thing is clear - Switch 2 has delivered the strongest opening Nintendo has ever seen, backed by solid hardware, smart timing, and a loyal gaming base.
