Astronomer’s co-founder and newly appointed interim CEO, Pete DeJoy, has officially addressed the viral Coldplay concert video that led to CEO Andy Byron’s resignation. The clip, which featured Byron and HR head Kristin Cabot embracing on the kiss cam at Gillette Stadium, gained widespread attention after surfacing online. Both executives are married to other people and attempted to duck out of the camera shot, but the moment had already gone viral.
In a public statement titled ‘Moving Forward at Astronomer’ DeJoy acknowledged the unusual media frenzy surrounding the incident. “The events of the past few days have received a level of media attention that few companies — let alone startups in our small corner of the data and AI world — ever encounter,” he wrote. While he admitted the circumstances were ‘surreal,’ DeJoy pointed out that Astronomer is now a ‘household name.’
Using the spotlight to redirect attention, DeJoy outlined the company’s rapid evolution. Initially focused on supporting Apache Airflow, Astronomer now powers vital data infrastructure across industries. “We’re privileged to sit at the center of our customers’ data and AI strategy,” he said. DeJoy also gave examples such as analytics for sports teams, AI-powered customer support, and autonomous driving technology.
DeJoy closed his message by stating, “Our mission is bigger than any one moment,” clearly indicating that the company intends to move forward with its innovation-focused vision. Kristin Cabot remains in her role as Chief People Officer, while DeJoy leads Astronomer through its most high-profile moment to date.
DeJoy's announcement as the new Interim CEO of Astronomer makes it clear that there will be a commitment to data privacy protocols and employee conduct. This communication not only demonstrates the company's commitment to accountability but also fosters trust with stakeholders through transparency and operational integrity.
