Facebook and Instagram users worldwide faced a major disruption on Tuesday morning when they lost access to primary platform features. Multiple sources verified that platform issues emerged at 9:00 AM EDT and affected Facebook and Instagram services until the end of the day.
The online service tracking platform Downdetector reported an influx of user complaints from people in the United States and worldwide. The majority of issues happened on Instagram, as users faced difficulties engaging with comments on their posts. Many complained that although their stories and posts displayed comments, clicking on them led to a message indicating no comments were available. Around 10:00 AM, more than 4,000 users in the U.S. reported difficulties on Instagram, with 60% of complaints linked to the comment section.
Meanwhile Facebook encountered major difficulties when users could not access their profiles during this period. The majority of issues experienced by Facebook users stemmed from login problems representing a total of one third of all reported disruptions. Users reported problems with Facebook's website and application which prevented them from accessing the platforms after successful logins. User reports at 10:30 AM disclosed that connectivity issues failed to resolve along with new service disruptions experienced by Facebook Messenger and Instacart.
As of now, Meta has not issued an official statement regarding the cause of the outage. Users remained without any clear timelines regarding the restoration of full service. Other platforms such as Earthlink and Indeed joined Meta in facing connectivity problems at the same period which suggests a widespread problem in online infrastructure.
This incident follows a similar event earlier this month, when Instagram users experienced outages affecting thousands of accounts. On that occasion, Meta took several hours to resolve the disruptions, which also impacted Facebook, WhatsApp, and Threads. Meta’s status page briefly listed “medium disruptions” in specific services like Facebook Ads Manager but did not mention any widespread issues beyond that.
Recent outages remain a consistent problem for Meta as the company has experienced multiple system failures recently. Last December over 100,000 users from Facebook and Instagram struggled to access their platforms and view content. Users experienced prolonged frustration when Meta platforms became unavailable for several hours as they depended on these platforms for social interactions and business objectives. Earlier blackouts the latest of which occurred in March 2024, impacted more than half a million Facebook subscribers and lasted approximately two hours.
