Apple is making Markdown files easier to view on Mac with the latest macOS 27.3 developer beta. The update adds native Markdown rendering to Quick Look, allowing users to preview formatted documents directly from Finder without opening a separate application. The change is a small but useful improvement for people who regularly work with Markdown documents, including writers, developers and users who maintain digital notes.

Quick Look Now Displays Formatted Markdown

Earlier, when you opened a Markdown file using Quick Look, the raw text was shown, complete with symbols needed to make headings, bold text, lists, and links. However, in the upcoming macOS 27.3 update, your Markdown file will be shown with proper formatting.

You can select any Markdown (.md) file in Finder and then press the Space bar to bring up the Quick Look preview pane, which will display your file in an easily readable form. The new Quick Look support for Markdown files will be available in the first developer beta of macOS 27.3, released on November 3.

Apple Expands Markdown Support Across Its Platforms

This new update is made possible due to the growing use of Markdown by Apple in its entire software environment. The Apple Notes app allows importing and exporting of files in the Markdown format, whereas the recent iOS 27 version allows more features of copy-pasting of Markdown formatted files.

Markdown is an easy-to-use lightweight format which employs plain-text formatting with the help of special characters. It is widely used for technical documentation, online publishing, project notes and software development.

The format is also becoming more relevant to artificial intelligence tools. Apple's new Siri AI app skills framework uses Markdown-based SKILL.md files, allowing developers to provide instructions that help Siri handle tasks within their applications.

A Small Change With Everyday Benefits

Native Markdown previews remove an extra step for Mac users who frequently check notes, drafts or technical documents. While the feature does not replace a full Markdown editor, it makes quick document reviews more convenient. The functionality is currently available in the macOS 27.3 developer beta.
