Meta has rolled out Instants, a new Instagram feature, marking its latest attempt to reclaim Gen Z attention from rivals like Snapchat and BeReal. The early launch in select European markets signals a calculated test phase, hinting at a broader global rollout that could reshape how users share fleeting, everyday moments online.
Instants is a new Instagram feature from Meta Platforms that allows users to share quick, unfiltered photos or videos with close friends. It removes the need to use heavy editing tools and focuses on real-time moments. Posts disappear when viewed or within 24 hours. The feature keeps sharing private and direct, aiming to shift users away from polished feeds toward more natural, everyday interactions on the platform.
Instants is currently available in a limited rollout.
Confirmed launch markets:
Spain
Italy
Limited testing access:
Israel
Bolivia
New Zealand
The feature has not launched in India or most other regions yet. Meta is still testing before a wider release.
Instants on Instagram works within an existing network. Users share with the same followers and close friends, unlike Snapchat or BeReal, where connections often differ.
No fixed posting time sets it apart from BeReal’s daily prompt. Users post when they want.
Editing stays limited but not absent. Text is allowed, heavy filters are not.
The feature ties into DMs, making sharing part of regular Instagram use.
Focus remains on small, private groups.

Instants gives Meta Platforms an opportunity to bring Gen Z back to Instagram by reducing the pressure to post polished content. It focuses on quick, private sharing, the same behaviour that draws users to Snapchat and BeReal.
The goal is all about user retention. More daily sharing keeps users active across DMs, Stories, and Reels. While Instants will not result in revenue generation, it can help increase the time spent on Instagram. This will, in turn, strengthen Meta’s ad business and keep users inside its ecosystem.
