Google’s Gemini AI can now automate certain multi-step tasks on the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S26 series, enhancing productivity and cross-app functionality. The feature ties into the growing trend of using AI to automate more tasks in users’ personal lives.

What’s New in Gemini’s Latest Update?

On 25 February 2026, Wednesday, Google announced a series of updates to its Gemini AI-powered features on Android. The most notable one is the new way of using AI to handle multi-step tasks, such as ordering an Uber or food delivery.

These automations join other Gemini improvements, such as expanded scam detection for phone calls and ‘Circle to Search’ updates. It will allow users to identify all items on the phone’s screen.

How Gemini’s Multi-Step Task Automation Works

According to the Google blog post: “Simply long-press the power button and ask Gemini to help book you a ride home or reorder your last meal on DoorDash. Gemini will work seamlessly in the background, leaving you free to keep using your phone.”

AI-powered automations can sometimes go wrong. To prevent this, Google has added some protections. For starters, the automations cannot be kicked off without an explicit command from the device’s owner.

Users can watch their progress in real time and stop the task if it is making a mistake or getting stuck. Google also noted that the automations take place in a secure, virtual window on the phone. Access is limited to specific apps, not the rest of the device's data.

Google’s ‘Circle to Search’ feature will let users use gestures like scribbles and circles to initiate searches. Users can now conduct all searches on the phone screen. The user only needs to bring an item of clothing, an accessory, or even a group of items onto their screen to learn more about the topic.

Which Devices Support the Feature?

The new features will be available only in the Gemini app on certain devices, including the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S26 series. It will initially be available only in the US and Korea.

“This beta feature will be initially available for select apps in the food, grocery, and rideshare categories. We’re just getting started, and we look forward to hearing your feedback,” Google mentioned in the blog post.

The scam detection features will be available on Samsung Galaxy S26 series devices in the US. This feature is already available on Pixel phones in the US, Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, and the UK.

How This Strengthens Google’s AI Ecosystem

The automations, explains Google, allow users to offload their to-do list to Gemini essentially. However, when put into practice, the types of things Gemini can manage are still limited.

Google has been steadily releasing Gemini updates to its Android ecosystem at regular intervals through targeted new operating system updates. Most of them are targeted at its flagship phone, the Google Pixel. On the other hand, Apple has been struggling to deliver a more comprehensive AI feature set, including an AI-powered Siri, a launch that has been pushed back multiple times.

The Bigger Picture: AI Agents on Smartphones

Gemini’s new automation capabilities reflect a broader shift toward AI agents that can execute tasks, not just answer queries. ChatGPT lets users create tasks that can run on schedules or at specific times, and it offers an agent that can complete a variety of computer-based tasks.

Anthropic’s Cowork brings the capabilities of its Claude AI to non-coding tasks. It lets non-developers automate everyday file and task management. Another AI tool, OpenClaw, recently went viral for its ability to handle everyday tasks like sending emails, managing calendars, and checking flight status.

As smartphones evolve into proactive digital assistants, on-device intelligence and cross-app automation could redefine productivity.
