Elon Musk has issued a stern warning to users misusing X’s AI tool, Grok, following a viral trend where the platform was prompted to create sexually explicit images. These included depictions of women and minors in bikinis, sparking outrage and regulatory scrutiny worldwide.
Musk retweeted X’s Safety account message on January 3, adding, ‘We’re not kidding.’ The platform emphasized that anyone using Grok to generate illegal content will face the same consequences as if they directly uploaded prohibited material. X will remove illegal content, permanently suspend accounts, and cooperate with law enforcement when necessary.
Reports show that users exploited Grok to manipulate images without consent, producing sexualized content that was widely circulated online. Even individuals sharing their own images have reportedly been targeted, raising concerns about privacy and AI abuse.
India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued a notice to X, seeking an Action Taken Report within 72 hours. The ministry cited X’s failure to follow statutory due diligence under the IT Act, 2000, and warned that non-compliance could lead to legal consequences, including losing liability exemptions under Section 79 of the IT Act.

MeitY requested details on Grok’s technical and organizational measures, the role of X’s Chief Compliance Officer, and the mechanisms used to remove offending content. Authorities stressed that mandatory reporting procedures must be in place to prevent further misuse.
The government warned that failure to act could result in significant legal action, including liability for hosting or creating obscene content through AI services. X has pledged to enforce rules and suspend offending accounts to prevent further misuse.
