The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is developing a QR code-enabled e-Aadhaar system, expected to be released later this year. Likely to be named as ‘e-Aadhaar’, the app will allow users to verify their identity digitally in a few clicks. Let’s take a look at the early updates before the official launch of the next step of digital convenience.
From standing in a long queue for hours to carrying physical copies, verification, and information updates have been a tedious task for millions of Indians, especially in areas with a smaller number of authorized centers.
UIDAI’s initiative to build a readily accessible electronic system will allow users to update important details like their name, address, date of birth, and mobile number directly from their phones.
UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar confirmed that over 2,000 of the existing one lakh Aadhaar authentication devices have already been upgraded to support the QR-based system. People need to visit enrolment centres in person only for biometric changes, including fingerprint or iris updates, starting in November 2025.
Once launched, users will be allowed to update important details such as their name, residential address, date of birth, and mobile number directly through their smartphones, a step intended to reduce the need for physical visits to Aadhaar enrolment centres for routine updates.
To make this transition easier, the e-Aadhaar app will automatically retrieve previously verified information from the government databases. This will help users avoid manually uploading documents for initial verification. The following are the documents that can be linked:
Birth certificates
Passports
Driving licences
Ration cards under the Public Distribution System (PDS)
MNREGA scheme records
Electricity bill (for address verification)
The UIDAI is in talks with educational boards, such as the CBSE, to implement biometric enrollment drives for students. This initiative will ensure Aadhaar details of students remain up-to-date between the ages of five and seven and between 15 and 17 years. Meanwhile, a biometric update is mandatory for babies born in India before the age of seven.

Amidst rising risks of cyber attacks, the UIDAI has planned the implementation of advanced artificial intelligence technologies and Face ID verification for the e-Adhaar system. To reduce unauthorized access and identity theft, the app will allow users to utilize facial recognition along with passwords or OTPs.
The e-Aadhaar app launch is expected to provide a one-stop solution to make the Aadhaar update process much easier, streamlining the verification for both individuals and service providers. Holders are advised to go through the terms and conditions to understand how the process works.
