Dell Technologies has secured a five-year Pentagon software agreement worth about $9.7 billion, months after founder and CEO Michael Dell and his wife, Susan Dell, pledged $6.25 billion to seed ‘Trump accounts’ for children in the United States.

The contract gives Dell Federal Systems a major role in supplying Microsoft 365, cloud subscriptions, and on-premises licensing tools across the US military. The Defense Department said Dell won the award through a competitive process, while the timing has drawn public attention due to Michael Dell’s earlier donation and his recent ties to President Donald Trump.

Dell Federal Systems Wins Pentagon Contract

The Department of Defense announced the five-year agreement on Wednesday. The deal, known as the Microsoft Department of War Enterprise Software Agreement II Core Enterprise Technology Agreement, covers Microsoft 365, advanced cloud subscriptions, and software licensing services.

Dell Federal Systems, a Dell Technologies unit focused on government work, will manage the agreement. Officials said the contract will give the Pentagon one central place to buy and manage Microsoft enterprise software. It will also cover the intelligence community and the US Coast Guard.

Defense Department Chief Information Officer Kirsten Davies said the agreement will help consolidate critical software and services across federal defense agencies. Acting Navy Chief Information Officer Barry Tanner also said Dell won after vendors went through an evaluation process.

Tanner said, “The vendors were all evaluated based on competition, comparison to GSA schedule pricing, and overall chain of value to the department.” He added, “Going through the process of evaluation, they came out on top.”

Officials Say Deal Will Cut Software Costs

Pentagon officials said the agreement aims to reduce duplicate software spending across the services and agencies. Many departments already use Microsoft products, but separate contracts have added cost and complexity over time.

According to Davies, the new structure will consolidate existing IT budgets into one purchasing vehicle. She said the agreement is expected to save about $422 million each year. The savings would come from reducing repeated licensing costs and using the Pentagon’s full buying power.

The contract comes as the Pentagon faces pressure from lawmakers to improve its financial controls. The department is also seeking approval for a fiscal 2027 budget of about $1.5 trillion, according to reports.

However, officials said the contract does not create a new software system. Instead, it reorganizes how the Defense Department buys Microsoft tools that are already widely used. These include email, office software, cloud services, and related licensing products.

Dell Donation Draws Fresh Attention

The award has drawn attention since it follows Michael Dell’s pledge to fund ‘Trump accounts’ for American children. Dell and his wife announced a $6.25 billion donation last year to support the investment accounts.

Michael Dell said at the time, “We’ve seen what happens when a child gets even a small financial head start — their world expands.” The couple also described the gift as the largest donation they had made and said more philanthropic plans could follow.

President Trump has publicly praised the Dell family over the donation. At a White House event this month, he urged Americans to “go out and buy a Dell” after speaking about the family’s support for the accounts.

Michael Dell has also maintained visible ties with Trump. He congratulated Trump after his 2024 election win and later joined Trump’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Separately, Dell also pledged $750 million to the University of Texas at Austin for a new AI-focused medical center and research campus.

Dell Technologies has not been accused of wrongdoing in the Pentagon contract. Defense officials said the company won through a competitive process. Still, the timeline has placed the company’s government work, philanthropy, and political proximity under fresh public scrutiny.
