
New MA 15+ ratings have been issued by the Australian Classification Board for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) and Modern Warfare 3 (2011). Hinting that Activision Blizzard is developing next-gen console versions of these classics. The April 3 listings features cross-generation labels for PlayStation 5. The MW3 entry talks of in-game purchases, giving the implication of online multiplayer capability.
When Activision re-released MW2 in 2020, the absence of multiplayer was the main complaint from fans. A fan-driven project in 2024 tried to bring back it through a mod but was dropped by the publisher. The new categorization suggests that Activision is looking to officially bring back multiplayer mode with updated features.
Earlier this year, there were rumors that MW2 would be coming to Xbox Game Pass, giving hope for a complete multiplayer comeback. At the same time, talks surfaced that Modern Warfare 4 was in production for the next-gen Xbox, with the possibility of a 2026 release. No official announcements have been made, but the leaks tie into a larger franchise comeback.
The recent success of Warzone's Verdansk return, which allegedly made "off the charts" figures, shows the strength of nostalgia in the franchise's playbook. Re-releasing MW2 and MW3 in their full features could be another step towards reviving the fan base and cashing in on old favorites.
Activision has not issued any official comments on the ratings or speculated re-releases. The data, however, points to an announcement in the near future. Until then, Call of Duty fans will have to wait for the green light to officially proceed.
