Apple is reportedly working on new satellite-based features for iPhones to make them functional even without mobile networks.
According to a report by Bloomberg, the company plans to expand satellite connectivity to Apple Maps and Messages, allowing users to navigate or chat in areas where a cellular signal is unavailable. The goal is to make iPhones more dependable in remote areas and less reliant on traditional carriers.
At the iPhone 14 launch event in 2022, Apple showcased the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature, which allows users to contact emergency services during critical situations, particularly in areas with no cellular network coverage.
The feature has since expanded to include Roadside Assistance via Satellite, which assists drivers stranded in areas with limited network coverage. According to people familiar with its plans, the next step is to integrate satellite connectivity into more everyday tools, such as maps and messaging, making ‘off-grid’ use a reality.
The effort is being led by Apple’s internal Satellite Connectivity Group, in close cooperation with Globalstar, the satellite operator that already powers its emergency services. While the firm’s system is small compared to rivals like SpaceX’s Starlink, Apple reportedly funded major upgrades to support upcoming features.
Engineers are working on what they call ‘natural usage,’ which will enable iPhones to stay connected without users having to direct the device toward the sky.
Future iPhones could adopt a 5G NTN-a hybrid system, combining mobile towers with satellite signals. It could dramatically improve coverage in regions where connectivity is unreliable, including rural parts of India, where dropped signals remain common.

Apple is reportedly developing a developer framework that will enable third-party apps to utilize satellite connections. This means that apps for travel, health, and safety can work without an internet connection, which is particularly useful for hikers, travelers, or anyone in an emergency.
The biggest uncertainty for Apple may come from its partner. Globalstar is reportedly exploring a sale, with SpaceX rumored to be a potential buyer. This would eventually complicate Apple’s satellite plans.
For now, the tech giant continues to focus on expanding its capabilities, including the potential to send photos via satellite. However, at least, calls and web access via satellite remain off the table currently. However, Apple’s push suggests an iPhone without network limits may soon be within reach.
