Apple is currently testing the compatibility and functionality of AirPods and Apple Watch features with third-party devices to expand its restricted ecosystem. The company is using the iOS 16.5 beta version to evaluate how iPhones work with earphones and wearable devices that are not made by Apple. This move was influenced by regulatory pressure from the European Union.

AirPods-Style Pairing for Third-Party Earphones

The testing process is currently evaluating proximity-based pairing for third-party earphones as its most important update. The new feature addition will be available only across certain brands because of its incomplete development status.

The new setup provides users with an easier onboarding experience. They can easily connect compatible earbuds to their iPhones and iPads with a one-tap setup process that activates when the devices are brought close.

Live Activities for Non-Apple Wearables

Apple is expanding its notification forwarding system to devices made by other companies. This feature enables smartwatches and fitness trackers to display iPhone notifications while users manage their alerts. When one connects a third-party wearable device, the Apple Watch will stop receiving notifications.

The company is also testing Live Activities support. This feature provides access to real-time updates like match scores and ride-tracking information on third-party wearable devices.

Why This Matters

The EU’s Digital Markets Act is driving these changes, and the Commission expects rollout in 2026. The approach that Apple developed for the EU market now serves as a worldwide standard because it established new industry practices, especially after Apple introduced USB-C charging for iPhones.

The updates will provide users with easier options to select devices, eliminating the need for Apple accessories. Third-party brands will experience better product usage and greater market share when core functions operate without issues.

Final Words

Apple needs to establish a system that allows it to follow regulations while controlling its entire ecosystem. The company will expand access to third-party devices but still maintain restrictions on their ability to work with Apple products. Consumers will soon experience a flexible multi-brand Apple ecosystem.
