Apple Stops iOS 18.6.2 Signing, Blocking Downgrades After iOS 26 Update

Apple Locks iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs on iOS 26 as Older Versions are No Longer Supported
Published on

Apple has indefinitely stopped signing iOS 18.6.2, which means iPhone users who have updated to iOS 26 cannot go back to the older version. The exact change affects iPadOS 18.6.2 and tvOS 18.6, so iPads and Apple TVs can no longer initiate downgrades.

Why are  Downgrades No Longer Possible?

Apple has ended the downgrade option to iOS 18.6.2 for devices already upgraded to iOS 26. The company has stopped signing this specific version of iOS, making the older release unavailable for installation.

This move also affects devices other than iPhones. Apple also halted signing for iPadOS 18.6.2 and tvOS 18.6, closing the downgrade route for iPads and Apple TVs.

Signing a software version means Apple’s servers verify it is valid before allowing installation. Once Apple stops signing a version, its installation fails the verification.

Apple released the iOS 26 update a week ago. With this launch, many expected features such as a redesigned interface known as ‘Liquid Glass,’ dynamic lock screen elements, and AI integration came into play. Users reported mixed experiences with the new UI. Some hoped to revert to iOS 18.6.2 due to bugs or performance issues.

Impact on Users and Developers

Legacy iPad and iPhone users have lost the downgrade option. Devices on iOS 26 cannot revert to iOS 18.6.2, even if they wish to. Apple still permits users who have not upgraded to iOS 26 to stay on iOS 18, but once upgraded, there is no rollback.

Another version, iOS 18.7, remains signed. But for devices eligible for iOS 26, no IPSW files exist for iOS 18.7. That gap renders downgrading to 18.7 from iOS 26 practically infeasible.

The change marks a firm stance in Apple’s update policy. Apple prioritises device security, bug fixes, and consistency over granting users the flexibility to revert versions.

Developers and tech watchers note that stopping older versions remains a common strategy. It helps Apple limit fragmentation across its ecosystem and reduce risks tied to unpatched software.
