Apple is bringing Live Activities to more Mac users through macOS 27.3, including devices without Dynamic Island. The first developer beta arrived in November 2026, adding real-time updates and quick controls directly to the Mac menu bar. The feature helps users check important activities without opening individual applications.
The update supports Apple silicon Macs that lack the new Dynamic Island display design. Users can view music playback, timers, voice recordings and screen recording updates from the menu bar. Apple is also allowing third-party developers to bring Live Activities to their Mac applications.
The menu bar will display these activities near the top-right corner of the screen. This gives users quick access to ongoing tasks while working across different windows. The feature also reduces the need to switch between apps for simple actions.
Apple Music users can pause songs directly from the Live Activities display. Clock users can follow active timers, while Voice Memos shows recording activity. The beta also includes updates for ongoing screen recordings.
Apple has also opened Live Activities support to third-party Mac developers. Developers can use Apple's ActivityKit framework to add similar features to their applications. This could bring more useful updates from other apps into the Mac menu bar.
Apple previously supported Live Activities from iPhones on Macs running macOS 26. However, those updates appeared through iPhone mirroring rather than native Mac activities. The new update allows supported Mac apps to start their own activities.
Apple described the feature as a way to provide "timely updates at a glance." The company also highlighted quick actions, including accepting AirDrop requests and pausing music with one tap.
The first macOS 27.3 developer beta arrived on November 3, 2026. Apple currently expects the public release to arrive in December. The company could still change features before the stable version reaches users.
The update brings a more useful menu bar experience without requiring newer Mac hardware. However, Intel-based Macs are not expected to receive this feature. The new functionality targets supported Apple silicon devices running macOS 27.3.
